The .45colt factory loads are very light for liability reasons. Colt Single Action Army and very early S&W revolvers are not strong enough for heavy powder charges. The result is factoy .45 colt loads that mirror .45acp loads. The cartridge has much more potential though. I shoot 300gr Cor-Bons in my Ruger that have a velocity of 1300fps and muzzle energy of 1138ft/lbs. Thats as good as a .44magnum. Now I don't think shooting these high end cartridges in my Taurus would be very wise, but a load that fell somewhere in the middle would be just right. Maybe somewhere in the strong 10mm range. As far as ballistics in a short barrel gun, I don't have a chronograph so I really can't say for sure. The 450 Taurus is strictly a .45 colt gun.
