Bought 1866 Yellowboy (Uberti)

I made the move today and bought a Uberti 1866 Yellowboy carbine (.45LC). It's a high-quality, beautiful gun and I look forward to shooting it -- when the weather turns warmer.

But it has a flip-up rear sight that I have never seen before. When flipped down, it's a conventional notch site. When flipped up it has two sights for longer distances -- an aperture sight (low) and a notch sight (high).

Does anyone know what distances the two other sights are intended for? I haven't been able to find anything on the Internet.

One problem with the '66 is an inherent design flaw with the cartridge stop on the back of the ladle (loading gate). It's a rather fragile tab simply bent back at a 90° to the ladle and often bends or breaks completely off, sending the rest of the rounds in the magazine shooting back into the action and jamming it up. It's a simple matter to reinforce it with a small gusset and a bit of solder. Some folks have even used JB weld with good results.

Here are a couple of mine that have been reinforced. The top one had been broken completely off, so I made a new piece with a broad footprint and silver soldered it on. It's worked fine for many years now.

Knowing that this was a problem, I'm one of the ones that put a blob of JB Weld where you have the solderings. Two years of hard use and no problems.

Sights are probably "set" for 200 and 300 yards. The only way to know for sure is to shoot them.
