Bothering deer hunters?

I'm not a big hunter, But a few times a year I like to take my 17hmr out and kill a couple rabbits. The small game season in Ct. overlaps the deer season though. And I'd hate spook a deer that someone has been freezing their but off in a stand for 5 hours to shoot. But it is state land and I am a hunter too. Now I can skip half my season and wait till their season ends. Or I can go out onto PUBLIC land and walk around looking for rabbits. But possibly ruin someone elses day. But if I'm sitting home and not hunting, than my day is ruined already. What do you think?

Go mid day. Usually deer are bedded down or browsing in thick cover. This will help push them around for other hunters who are probably cold and walking around anyway.

Wear orange.

Deer hunters sometimes just sit on their stands during lunch because they know that is a good time to have a spooked deer run across their field of fire. I got a deer three years ago in midmorning after she'd been stirred up by somebody running dogs beyond the ridge.

I would say go for it. Every legal hunter has a right. yes you may even "drive" a deer to a deer hunter. Buy a deer license and poke one in the head if your state allows using rimfire on them.

Hunting rabbits, you'll probably be hunting old fencerows, fields, edges and roadsides. Most deer hunters on public land are going to be in the woods. Like others said, wear orange, go mid-day and have fun.

BTW- There are usually some public lands that are bow-only or are small-game only. If you want to hunt dusk and dawn, check as see if there are any of these nearby.

I don't mind sharing my hunting areas on public lands. Even if you don't deer hunt at least you are hunting something. I'll doubt that you will find very many negative replies when talking hunting with fellow hunters.
