bore solvent

What is a good solvent for the chrome lined barrels on AR-15's? I understand most gun solvents contain ammonia which is a no-no for chrome lined barrels. Thanks, Jim

Most any bore solvent will work fine in a chrome bore. Any potential problems would be with allowing it to stay in the bore for a long period of time.

Don't worry about using ammonia type solvents in a chrome bore. I've done so for years with no ill effects. I would recommend that you never use ammonia (even Hoppe's #9) on nickel. The ammonia has no negative effects on the nickel itself, but will attack the copper base under the nickel if it finds its way through.

Bore solvent? HNO_3

Nitric acid would work well....

sorry.. I couldn't resist. I always thought the term "bore solvent" was kind of silly.. it's actually "junk-in-the-bore solvent" or "powder solvent"

yes, I'm tired.

Bore solvent in chrome lined bore

Nobody knows about Ed's Red?

It's a modernized version of a Frankford Arsenal cleaner I believe Julian Hatcher was involved with...The article is in my library SOMEWHERE.

(You make it yourself w/ deodorized Kero, ATF, Acetone, and Odorless Paint Thinner)

I've used it for years with all my semi-auto pistols, a crusty Turkish Mauser, a commercially rebarrelled VZ 24 and and a chrome lined SKS with cast and jacketed and no leading or defects in years.

A gallon of Ed's Red costs what the cost is for a bottle of Hoppes Semi-Auto Solvent (which IS an excellent product)

Hope's #9 is not ALLOWED in this household...Since they changed the formulation dozens of years ago and reduced the ammonia to virtually NOTHING and since it smells like BANANNAS, I prefer the more pleasant smell fo their silver-label semi-auto solvent or ED's Red.
