Does anyone have any experience with bore snakes? I am looking for a quick safe way to clean firearm barrels with out haveing the chance to damage the rifling. So does anyone use bore snakes, if so do they work and what is your process of useing them?

Thank you, Your replys will be greatly appreciated,

Reed

Gunz, I use them all the time, they are great for a quickey bore clean after a range session. They tend to get the loose stuff out and make it alot easier on you when you thoughly clean the firearm later. But they will never replace a good rod, brush, and patch cleaning.

While .44 magnum shotshells may be good for boresnakes, the boresnakes are then no good to you. Boresnakes work great for a quick clean or a final pass during a thorough cleaning. They do not replace regular cleaning, IMHO, but they are as handy as a pocket on a shirt. The cheapest place I have found them is at UNCLELEES.COM. If you order more than a couple, then the cost of shipping for each is cheaper. We ordered 5 with the average price being $12.50 each including shipping. That beats the normal $16.95 price in gun stores.

I have completely replaced all rods, patches, etc, because they do the job, if you do it right. Boresnake doesn't tell you to put bore cleaner in the barrel first, I don't believe, but I do, and my barrel is shinier than anything I've accomplished with a rod. Pass them through from the chamber, and pull them through twice- all done! I use Sweet's 7.62 solvent for my rifles and Hoppe's for the pistols.

I couldn't find a boresnake for a .45 at my local gun store, :( so I purchased .40 and 9mm boresnakes and kept them together for a while. The .40 boresnake finally got hungry enough and ate the 9mm boresnake, and now I have a perfect .45 boresnake. :D

Gopher,

I went to the Unclelees web site and could not find any reference to bore snakes. Where are they listed?

Thanks,

Albin

I love them! They don't TOTALLY do the job, in my opinion, but they get the lion's share of it. I've found that the larger the caliber, the less effective the bore snake is. Works great on my 9mm and my .308 bolt gun, but not quite as well on my Glock 21 (.45 ACP). I always end up going back with a rod and brush after a first pass on that one. The others are one pull and done.

Buy them, use them, LOVE them! :D

They can be washed in the washing machine with other laundry, or by hand. If washed with other laundry, it is good to put them in a "delicates" -type laundry bag. I do my bore snake at the same time I do my oily rags and what not. I have only done it once, however.

They are a quick way to semi-clean a bore in the field, but not really a substitute for solvent, bore brush and patches.
