Am I cleaning the barrel good? I just run a bore snake thru a few time then spray the barrel ,trigger, safety down with rem drilube or win.break free is that good enough or should I use the brush also?.

It is fine. Although Foaming Bore cleaner is really good too, shoot it through the bore then drain, then snake the bore.

Bore snakes are good to take to camp to give your barrel a quick cleaning at the end of the day to get any dirt, moisture or anything else out that may have gotten in the barrel during the days hunt.

There are better choices for a thorough cleaning. The bore snakes will remove anything loose in the barell For copper fouling you need to run patches and possibly brushes through the barrel along with proper solvents.

Just remember that a bore snake is only good if it is CLEAN. A dirty snake just rubs grit through the barrel.

Bore snakes have a good purpose and provide a quick easy way to mostly clean your barrel. I typically keep and use bore snakes both in my shop and at the range. But they are not 100%. I mean every so often I still need the cleaning rod and brush. Three passes with a bore snake is fast and easy enough to make sure your barrel is not being neglected. You break out a brush and patch with Butch's Bore Shine and you'll find more crud.

^ What he said. I use bore snakes for a quick clean, but every 3rd or 4th time, I break out the brush and bore juice.

I only use a bore snake for my .22 conversion unit. For everything else I use brushes and patches. A dirty bore snake is just something to smear more junk inside the barrel. If you clean the snake it would be OK, but I still prefer a brush and patches.

I'll do ya a favor, throw the bore snake in the garbage. If you search this website you'll find far too many that have had the string break leaving the bore snake lodged in the barrel and can't get it out. It's the poster boy for barrel cleaning gone bad. But yer a big boy, do what ya want.

Use both where appropriate - the snake for a quick clean, the brush for a serious one

To avoid the string braking while the snake is in the barrel, you tie another string to the other end so you can pull it out the back way

Talismans and Mystical Incantations aside:

I've found that if you never shoot the gun, barrel break-in and cleaning are never a problem...
