Bore snake

I've seen the advertisements for the Bore snake in magazines but considered it to be a gimmick. In one of the TFL discussions about how to best clean your firearm one post mentioned the Bore snake. I prefer personal testimoney to ads any day so when I saw them for sale at a gun show last Saturday for $15 I decided to try it on my .357 GP-100.

Only one word can suffice-WOW!! The package says to run it thru dry and it will clean your bore "in ten seconds". "Yeah, right", I'm thinking as I attempted to pull it thru (doesn't pull easily, and I was getting discouraged fast).
I finished pulling it all thru and used my bore illuminator to take a look and just could not believe my eyes, absolutely hospital clean. I did it again just for fun, like anything it goes better with practice. No solvents, no dirty patches, no brushes, no solvent running all over the handgun, your hand, your desktop, and no smell.

You just gotta get one of these, I'm buying one tomorrow for my .22 Browning.

The trick is to find them for less than $15 - after taxes or shipping. I have seen them from $13.50 to $19.95. I have one for my .45 and think it is great for cleaning at the range or a final swipe or two after a major cleaning.

I think Cheaper than Dirt (cheaperthandirt.com) has them for about $14 plus taxes or shipping, but sometimes you can get better deals at the shows, especially if they aren't charging tax.

MidwayUSA has them on sale right now, for... not sure whether it is appropriate to post the price, so check you May 2000 catalog for rifle, pistol, and shotgun prices.

As we all know Midway includes shipping, and unless you are in MO, will not be charged sales tax by them.

i bought one last weekend for my .22 browning buckmark. it didn't work as well as i thought it would, but still better than using just a brush and patches. i ran a patch with #9 through first, then used the bore snake about three times. i checked to see how clean it was by running a dry patch through and it came out dirty. it took like three cycles of this till i got it clean enough for my standards.

Have been using them for about a year now and they work as advertised.
Cleaning them is a bit of a pain though unless you get a small wash bag, you can find them at Wal-Mart or the "Other-Mart" for washing delicates and toss them in the washing machine on gental cycle with minimun soap.
The alternitive is hand washing and stabbin' the heck outta your hands with the brush end.
