Bore snake sufficient?

works for me

plus I take the BCG out and hit it with some quick TLC & quick cleaning of the upper and some light lube.

How much shooting and what is the time frame between shooting and cleaning? I try to clean within 2-3 days of shooting. A few runs with a boresnake usually does the job. I figure unless you're shooting competitively, then a boresnake will work for you, too.

Remember that a boresnake is a cleaning tool ONLY when it is clean itself. Once it gets dirty, then it is no longer a cleaning tool (I don't even know what to call it at that point).

It works well for me. My usual routine is just a shot of gun oil followed by a pass with the snake.

If it's extra dirty I spray a shot of kroil down the barrel, snake it and the follow up with a dry patch to clean out the kroil and another soaked in gun oil.

I clean my gun the normal way and just use the boresnake at the range or in the field. I don't think it's the only way a gun should be cleaned.

IMHO you need more than that. Boresnakes are great while in camp or at the range but for a really good cleaning you need to swab with solvent, scrub with a brush and clean with a patch. Again, just my opinion.

A pass with a bore snake is not going to remove copper fouling. It will probably remove some of the carbon fouling....how much? Depends on how much is there.

I like bore snakes and use all sizes. They are really good for range boxes and a quick wipe after hunting. But bore snakes do not replace or eliminate the need for normal cleaning. I often use bore snakes several times or more while shooting, but then eventually clean the bores normally when more time in the shop permits. Use patches, solvents and Butch's Bore Shine and you'll get more gunk out that the bore snake can leave behind. I especially like the shorter pistol lengths and run them through the assorted handguns after shooting sessions.

No! Eventually you will have to address copper fouling and a drop of oil and a bore snake won't do the job. Purchase a cleaning kit, a one piece cleaning rod, and some solvent designed to remove copper from barrel. Nothing wrong with bore snakes. Just not good enough!
