bore scope ?

Has anyone here ever seen a home made bore scope?
I would like to be able to see the chamber and lead
on my AR barrel. I know I could just take off the barrel,
put it up next to my eye and look, but I would like to not
have to go to all that work.
Any thoughts?

bore scope

Sir;
Never saw a homemade one but Doc brought one up two years ago and we used it.
Now, a word of advice - if you have a "favorite gun don't look at the barrel and chamber with a bore-scope. That thing will show EVERY imperfection and simply scare you to death.
They are a nice tool for pitted spots etc., but really show what a bore looks like.

Harry,

I have wondered about buying one for the "fun of it". I see this as a choice between another gun and a toy. They both cost about the same, but the bore scope would be useful for cleaning and the like.

If you were not a smith and just an interested shooter, do you see much value in them?

Any advice or general comments?

Thanks!

bore scope

Peter;
I think I'd buy another gun! The scope is a fine tool to have and would really show what the inside of your favorite piece looks like:eek: but the striations of buttoning or "cut rifling" to me are of no consequence - you don't even need a "straight" barrel to shoot well.
We had a Sako AII in 22-250 and at 200 yards would shoot dime size groups at that distance (as hard as that is to believe) but I sold it and we rebarreled it to 308. The old Sako bbl? It ran out in the lathe at least .035 O.D. and looked like a snake wiggling when looking through it turning! Yet it really shot!
Buy a surplus military rifle (Mauser 98 - VZ24) and try your hand at sporterizing it. I like Mr. Kunhausens book on them. Good shooting.
