Bore gouges in a 870 MM - ????

CMOS

I've got a Remington 870 Marine Magnum that I've had for several years now. Some time ago (~3 yrs) while cleaning I noticed lengthwise gouges in the bore (entire circumference) that obviously were caused by firing some kind of shot through it.

I don't know, nor am I suggesting that these lengthwise gouges are a problem, but I'd at least like to understand what caused it.

I probably have shot some steel shot through it years ago. Maybe that did the "damage"?? I was sure to check the manual and the barrel markings for any type of ammo warnings but have seen none.

Any ideas here?

Scratching my head on this one, CMOS. Frankenstein has had plenty of BBBs through it's less than pristine bore, and no sign of any damage or marks.

BTW, my original 870 had some early steel loads through it, full choke and all, before I had the bbl lopped off. No marks there either.
