Does anyone have any opinions on a good pair of tactical boots? The brands I have seen are Altama, Bates, Magnum and Matterhorn? I am looking for pair confortable and durable boots to wear while shooting at IDPA and Gunsite. Is getting them waterproof worth the extra price? Thanks.
 
The Altama's are second grade. I THOUGHT they were the best, and even drove from Vancouver to Seattle to buy them. They pinch in the wrong places, wear out quickly, and the seams came apart within a year. Let's make that third grade. :)
 
I love Matterhorn boots, but I plan to switch to Danners next purchase. I found out the Cove Shoe Company gives money to anti-gun groups.
 
Take a gander at the Danner Patrol Boot. It's a short (6") black leather boot with Cordura nylon panels for light weight. Gore-Tex lining keeps you dry, Vibram sole for good traction. Note that the Patrol boots are not insulated but if you're going to Gunsite (Arizona?) I doubt you'll be in sub-zero weather.

The taller boots (like my Rocky 10" boots) are nice when you're knee-deep in snow but again I don't think there's much snow at Gunsite. :) The shorter boots are nicer for your intended use, as they are more comfortable for running, driving, etc.

I have been at a few firearms classes where the rain was so heavy it actually made us stop shooting and hide under the range overhangs. I say spring the extra $$$ for the Gore-Tex or similar waterproofing feature, it's definitely worth it. From my experiences camping in England and at Glacier National Park, nothing is worse than having wet feet (unless it's having cold and wet feet).

Pampers - I found Cove Shoe Company, the manufacturer of Matterhorn boots, on the list of contributors to anti-gun organizations posted on the NRA website.
 
Adidas GSG-9 boots are excellent. They are not made for humping a ruck through the mountains, but are a superior tactical boot.

SAR, following up on Justin's post, I now wear a pair of the all leather version of the Patrol boot (I think it's called Blackhawk, could be wrong) every day. This is courtesy of the magic of "casual day" and the fact that most of the joints in my lower body are in pretty cr@ppy shape, especially my ankles. With a nice spit-shine, I look trendy. These are great boots, very comfortable and have held up extremely well.

I bought mine from http://www.newenglandshoe.com which is in N Carolina (go figger) and dropships from the manufacturer. The prices and service are outstanding -- highly recommended.
 
Sar I don't think that you can go wrong w/ gore-tex boots. I live in Wisconsin with lots of snow and rain in winter and spring. Gore-tex is great for keeping the water out but its biggest asset is that it lets your feet breathe and lets the sweat out.

I've had good luck w/ Rocky boots but find a pair that fits you the best. Have fun at Gunsite.
 
Contrary to popular belief, insulation is not just for cold weather. In warm (and hot) weather the insulation keeps your feet at a constant temperature and they feel a lot more comfortable. Check into Red Wing and Irish Setter boots also. Very high quality boots. Stay away from anything Hi-Tec. They are crap. Rocky is made from second grade leather. Danner makes a decent boot.
