boot carry ?

years ago I'd occasionally read stuff in the gun mags about someone carrying a handgun in their boot. I fish rural areas quite often and never go unarmed, although I do make considerable effort to ensure that the gun isn't seen by other fishermen, hikers,etc.. What I'm wondering is if a kit gun like the Ruger bearcat in an IWB type holster clipped inside the top of a boot might be a viable way to carry during hot weather when extra clothing is not appropriate.

Ankle holster... your ankles move around way more than you think they do and anything not tied tightly down soon becomes intolerable. Any gun is heavy enough to very quickly be a huge annoyance. Most I would even remotely consider without a holster would be a clip it knife.

I have tried it a bunch of ways, no other way around it. Get an ankle holster. And remember for ankle carry you put the holster on then put the gun in it, the gun takes up that last bit of slack to keep it from flopping around.

i guess it would depend on the boot, etc but i ankle carry occasionally and i dont think what you described would work very well. It would either flop around or possibly gun and holster both would end up falling off the boot. Since youre fishing you could get away with some kind of fannie pack, like a fishing gear pack for your waist or chest and carry in there, or use an ankle holster.

I remember seeing pictures of Germans during WWII with pistols and all kinds of other stuff in their boots.

How about a concealment vest. They have built in inside holster pockets, and several outside pockets like a fishing vest. In very warm weather you could ware the vest without a shirt underneath. Also it would keep your handgun easier to get to, and higher on your body so you wouldn't worry about getting it wet if you step into the water.

I carry a keltec p11 in my boot for a bug. The boot is a side zip danner and the holster is a unkle mikes pocket holster. Th very end of the grip sticks slightly above the top of the boot but its a non issue with pants and i have run up flights of stairs without it shifting or falling out. Just be sure to tie that boot good and tight.

What kind of boots?

I have seen a loop sewn into a pair of cowboy boots that carried a Keltec/Ruger LCP, in a iwb holster with a clip.

Also have seen a slit cut into a cowboy boot and a large button sewn into a pocket holster to fit into said slit into the boot.

Rubber boots....I can't help you there.

I think someone used to make duty type boots with a tab at the top for attaching a holster. Might have been a S&W branded product. Haven't seen them for several years. I would not put anything but a stainless/synthetic gun inside the boot top due to the amount of perspiration. A good cobbler could attach a mounting pad to most high top boots but I would definitely use a holster with a safety strap. I carried a PPK type pistol in a custom fitted Uncle Mikes' ankle holster during summer for years.

Magnum PI carry, wet weather, boots....

I've posted on a few forums before how as a teen, I saw a episode of the CBS action series; Magnum PI, where slick PI Thomas Magnum(NRA member Tom Selleck) packed his full size GI type 1911a1 .45acp inside his cowboy boot! Yee-haw! ;)
If you are 6'04" like Selleck you may pull that off but most handgunners would be in a bind. Lol.
As for a fishing/outdoor carry, I'd be concerned with wet weather, snow, sweat or rain. I agree that a chest pocket or even a shoulder rig of synthetic-man made material might be best.
Lawman Leathergoods sells the STU treated holster. Bianchi sells the military type UM84/UM92 nylon holsters, HighNoon Holsters has the skin tite holsters but they fit belts.

Boot or footwear are not the ideal places for a main sidearm.

back in the early 1980's I carried a stainless Walther PPK in an Assault Systems clip on holster in the top of my engineer boot. Worked well until one day I jumped over a gate and the gun came out of the holster.

When riding my 'wing, if I'm not carrying my Rossi in my Don Hume belt slide, I will occasionally carry my Bersa .380 in my boot, but always in an ankle holster. Anything other than that is going to allow the gun to flop around way to much to be safe or comfortable.

ugly experience

IME 'boot carry' is best left to your third gun.

IF YOU MUST, get a holster that utilizes some securing method (like a thumb-break) or you'll be losing that gun from that holster.

You were talking about fishing concealed carry. I wear the nylon fishing shirts all the time with the shirttail out for CCW. They hide my J frame well in a Lobo Model 1 pancake. An inside the waist band holster might work out even better for you.

If wearing a fishing vest, an inside pocket should work out also. You can probably have a pocket added if you need to. I have had inside pockets added to a couple Wrangler blue jean jackets for my Nemisis pocket holster and a couple speed strips.

I have thought about this before. I think it may be practical with a very small handgun. I have a Derringer that I think would fit that bill... but I think it would be a back up.
