Books on Hand Gun Shooting

Hi people,

I need some help. I am a fairly decent shot. However, since I've retired, and have the time to do it, I would like to improve my shooting skills. I more or less shoot my own way, and I'm not sure if I am doing it the "correct" way.

I have never read any books, on the subject, so I would appreciate it if any of you could recommend any good books on basic hand gun shooting....Thanks.

An old but enjoyable book is "Shooting" by J. FitzGerald. He was a prominent writer and figure at Camp Perry (where he'd fix Colt revovlers for the shooters). It's one of the classics, but don't try his section entitled, "Shooting From a Motor Car." It's kinda difficult since modern cars don't have running boards (mebbe this can be tried from a pickup). While the book tends to lean towards one handed shooting, something we should all practice should one hand become disabled, it does briefly discuss two handed shooting. Check out page 363 where the shooter holds the gun two handed, bent support elbow, much like the Weaver stance.

A more modern book is Gregory Morrison's "The Modern Technique of the Pistol." Two handed revolver and pistol shooting, loading & unloading techniques, left handed shooting, presentation (drawing), pivoting. The book is a good primer.

The Pistol Shooter's Treasury is the best $6 you'll ever spend....

There are lots of good books, some already mentioned here. The single best pure handgun shooting reference I know of is Paul B. Weston's 'The Handbook of Handgunning'. Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 68-20570. Using this book, I'm convinced that a novice can train himself to expert technique. Every page is a gem, and has something to teach. It may be out of print. My copy was purchased in 1968. Publisher was Bonanza, a division of Crown Books.

Shooting better also depends partly on what kind of shooting you want to do.

Bullseye paper punching?
Bowling pins?
IPSC?
IDPA?
Self-defense?

Good review of fundamentals will definitely help. So will good coaching 1 on 1 and tailoring your shooting ability to your needs.

Thanks all,

I am just a "paper puncher." Ladydee, thanks for the refference to that Bullseye Pistol site. I did order THE PISTOLS SHOOTER'S TREASURY. Thanks again.
