Book recommendations

My father has decided to step into the world of firearms. He has very little experience of his own, no gun-familiar friends, and options for professional instruction are limited in his area. I live quite a ways from him, so I can't really help him much directly.

So he's asking for books, to at least give him some intellectual familiarity, and to get something of a base to build further instruction on. The guns-for-dummies idea. It's obviously no substitute for actual training, but he'd like something to go over while he works on getting that. Any recommendations?

The Civilian Marksmanship Program was chartered by Congress to provide the service you are looking for. Granted, a coach would be better, but if he/she isnt available, he/she isnt available.

The CMP Bookstore has just what you're looking for with inexpensive books and DVDs covering all aspects of shooting, from the basic beginner to the advance competitiive shooter.

Check out the list of material they provide.

Available at cz-usa.com, really a very good book full of good info for beginners and experts. I do NOT fit in the last column, BTW.

Oh sure you do. This is the internet and everything we read and type is true and 100% correct. How would we have known if YOU told a small white lie and said you are an expert?:eek:

Strangely enough there is no 'Guns For Dummies' book.

(That's a hint to some of our wanna be authors here.)

However if you go to Amazon and do a search on 'Guns For Dummies' many interesting books are shown.

DaleA, the first section of the book I posted is pretty much for absolute beginners, then it moves into more advanced stuff.:cool:
Don, me no lie, me no expert in anything but flatulence.:D

RIF, books, DVDs, sources....

Hello;
A few good sources for a new or entry level gun owner include; www.massadayoobgroup.com www.gunvideo.com www.bookfinder.com www.paladin-press.com www.gunlawguide.com www.NRA.org www.boatmanbooks.com www.bn.com .
Noted use of force expert, sworn LE officer & gun writer Massad Ayoob has many great books & articles for gun owners/armed citizens. Other popular(but maybe dated) non fiction firearm writers include; Rex Applegate, Duane Dieter, Leroy Thompson, Clint Smith, Jeff Cooper, Elmer Keith, John Farnam(check spelling) Bill Jordan, LTC David Grossman(check spelling, he's a US Army officer who wrote the book; On Killing).
Other "experts" have books & manuals but I can't vouch for all of them.
I'd suggest the non fiction gun & knife law guide book from atty; David Wong and the latest copy of the Traveller's Guide To Gun Laws, www.gunlawguide.com .
Tell your father or family member to know & understand the local gun/use of force laws, www.handgunlaw.us . He should obtain or get a valid concealed carry license or permit too, even if he does not plan to carry a firearm concealed.
Some gun/tactics instructors suggest this to armed citizens(class students) so that if there IS a lethal force event later, the gun owner/CWP holder can clearly show or document their concern for the law or being responsible prior to the incident.
I've heard some instructors & gun writers saying that gun owners/armed citizens subscribe to firearm/training magazines rather than buying them too to document the training/mindset but that may not be needed.

Stay safe & stay legal;

Go to the nra!

Teaching people about guns, the safe and enoyable thereof is what the NRA has been about since they started.

Everything from absolute beginner safety on up to match shooting and pointers where to get what specialised training you decide you want or need.

Here is a good place to start.

http://nrainstructors.org/searchcourse.aspx

I am a certified instructor in several disciplines as well as a certified range safety officer, so I can speak to the level of proficiency that instructors are expected to possess. My friends who are instructors are very responsible people and take their work seriously.
