"Basilisk Station" by David Weber (Honor Harrington series). Nicely done space opera with tactics being an updated taken on 1870-1905 naval history and military/civilian politics right out of our own time. Neat situations where the smugglers/customs/etc. are all right in their own ways...quite a departure from clear-cut light/dark forces.
