My son is reading Unintended Consequences...he asked me about the Bonus March...and if it really happened...I told him that it did take place. He was shocked...I went to Amazon.com to reccomend a book on this subject, but there is nothing currently in print. Does anyone know if there is any book on this subject....that is in print? Thanks for any help you can give.

There may be some information on the Bonus March in "American Caesar," the biography of Douglas MacArthur. He was Chief of Staff and ordered the Army into break up the Bonus March and destroy the "Hooverville" camps. He regretted that action for the rest of his life.

Type in bonus march

Smedley Butler ( a prominent march supporter) is an especially interesting figure to follow up on. He was offered dictatorship of the United States, and turned it down. :O

Was MacArthur nothing more than an FDR stooge? There's no doubt his actions did a whole lot of damage to Hoover in the next election. :O

And how about that governor from LA that has his eyes on the White House? Huey "The Kingfish" Long can't be counted out either. His ideas and escapades were u-n-b-e-l-i-e-v-a-b-l-e! America came a heartbeat (actually a kidney shot) away from having a madman worse than Stalin in charge :O

Not too many people even have a clue about the Bonus March or what happened there. They don't teach it it history classes (wonder why). I was shocked when I first read about it years ago. It's good to point it out to those "it can't happen here" folks.

It really lowered my opinion of MacAurther after I read about it.

Check out this used book site - lots of savings and maybe the only available source of books on this obscure and nationally embarrassing event.

These were decent American veterans, exercising their Constitutional rights to assemble and petition their Government. They weren't looking for a fight, or they would have been armed.
When the Government wants you to be disarmed so that you'll be safer, this is exactly what they have in mind. Let's not forget it.

In the long history of debts owed by the federal government, the Bonus March is just one more example. History is full of examples of people who died of old age trying to collect on debts owed to them by the federal government.

The moral of the story is; don't do business with the government if you expect to get paid for your services and don't serve in the military on any foreign adventures that don't have an unequivocal role in defending the US. WWI in Europe was a problem for Europe, not the US.
