Bonanza Scale

Hi everyone, I was hoping someone could give me some more information on a scale I recently acquired. I am giving reloading a try on a really limited budget, which means a lot of older or used equipment (which I am okay with). I have some pictures of the scale below. I understand the basics of a beam scale, but I don't know what the white plastic thing or the adjustment screw beside it does. Any ideas? Thanks!

Can't display photobucket images but the adjustment screw is probably to raise or lower the beam with the pan unloaded, the scale weight set to zero, and then centering the beam to zero with the adjustment screw. Can't comment on the white plastic.

Thanks for the input. I'm not sure what happened with the photobucket thing, it seems to work for me. I mean its not a big deal either way, it seems to work successfully as a old model scale, but I just haven't been able to find another scale that looks like this one.

RG1, I just saw your post. I had hoped it was similar to that, but sadly I don't see a paddle on the bottom of the beam to dampen it. I actually found out the screw is a keeper for a rod that connects to this plastic thing that I was curious about. I still have no idea what its purpose is, but I attached a picture if anyone is interested.
