Bolt handle wiggle

Greetings all, load development will resume this weekend, 1st up is the Savage 110 in .270. With the striker cocked, the bolt handle can be raised/lowered approximately 1/2 inch, slightly less with the striker at rest. When the handle is moved, the bolt remains motionless. Is this common?

IIRC: Savage uses a bolt assembled from several connecting parts held together by a threaded fastener at the back. Sounds like yours has come loose.
 
As Mobuck has indicated, it seems like the bolt retention pin is loose. It is located at the rear of the bolt and usually requires a 1/4" Allen wrench, if it is an older model it would be a flat tip screw driver.
 
I doubt that it's loose. Savage bolts are notoriously sloppy and ill-fitted. But the rifles shoot well, so buyers overlook the poor quality and klunkiness of the rifle.
 
I have a 35yr old 110E 223 that has just a little play in the bolt handle. A quick look at the bolts construction pretty much gives the explanation for the play. The old girl is a tack driver though.

Feels sloppy, but they have a floating bolt head. It's one of the things that makes a non-blue-printed action accurate.
