Bolt gun with wood

I'm feeling the bug for a new rifle. I currently own:
Ruger 10-22, Marlin 336 in 30-30, Marlin 1894 in 44 mag. Bushmaster V-match in 223.
I have left my Remington 700 BDL (30-06) with my cousin as I quit deer hunting some years back.
He needs it for grocery shopping and I hunted their land for so many years, it just seemed right to leave it in his good hands. My new desire is for a wooden stock bolt rifle for target shooting and possible deer hunting should the urge return. In my old age I’m looking for a rifle/caliber I can shoot more than 30 rounds out of before calling it quits. I would like it to be capable of taking deer size game out to 200 yards and good target shooting accuracy out to 300. Calibers that come to mind are the 270 Winchester and 260 Remington. Thoughts and recommendations are welcome.

Are you looking for a lightweight or heavier replacement?
Standard wood or laminated?
Thumbhole stock an option?
Short-action caliber only?

I was just on the Remington site and see there are quite a few discontinued models in certain calibers.
They might be available on one of the gun-selling sites for less money now.
I was going to suggest .308, too. :D

A few more details would help narrow the search.

The 260 is a good cartridge, but can be kinda expensive to shoot 30 rounds per shooting session. The 243 might be worth considering since you can get Federal Game-Shok 100gr ammo at Wally World for around $14 a box and it is very mild recoiling plus suitable for deer out to 300 yds.. IMHO..

243 sounds like what you want, light, good for deer size critters and they've been used as 1000 yard target rifles.

Ammo available any where. You can shoot it all day and your shoulder won't care.

I'm doing the exact same thing right now myself. I've had 270s and 308s and based on the number of "comfortable" shots you're talking about, I'd opt for the 243 (which is what I'm getting). It's reasonably good for deer and can be shot all day at varmits, etc. There's probably other good choices but after mulling it over for quite a while I'm going for the 243. Note: I've had several 243s over the years and shot a lot of deer and woodchucks with that caliber. Never lost a deer and in the right gun it's very accurate and soft shooting.

I really like my .243s and my eldest grandson used my Handi-rifle version to kill a 121 lb deer at 150 yards last fall, using Barnes handloaded bullets. The deer was probably dead when it instantly dropped to the ground.

I used the same rifle to drop an eastern coyote yearling offhand at 140 yards (lazered after the kill).

i'm assuming your budget will determine which rifle you buy?

anyway, i'd choose from the following list in 270 win:

Browning A-Bolt

Winchester Model 70

Weatherby Vanguard or Mark V

For me I'd lean towards the 308 as it has tons of different ammo available and for me doesn't recoil too much, and hardly at all if you put a Sim's recoil pad on it. The 270 for me has quite a bit more kick as preceived by my shoulder. The .243 is a great round but would likely cost a bit more to shoot and doesn't has as wide of range of ammo choices.

Browning x bolt 7-08, .243, or .270. They all shoot great and dont kill the shoulder, the .270 slams a little but its managable. If you want to shoot all day the .243 would be the one to choose

For a nice bolt action with a wood stock in .270 here are some good choices

Here's one in .25-06 that would fit your needs well

I would opt for the 270win basicly because you zero it at 200 and your within poi of 1in down to 25yards. Or atleast that's with my rem 700bdl

If it were me I'd go with a 243, or the 7mm08. if you are a hand loader you can use the 308 for the brass. Just neck it down, and make sure that the necks are not too thick.

The 257 Roberts is a great cartrige also.

You could consider:
7mm
6.5mm
6mm or 244 Remington

The .264 win mag is a screamer. High speed, flat trajectory. Most 130 or 140 grain loads are over 3100fps. It's kind of an oddball using a 6.7mm bullet and ammo is harder to find and kind of expensive compared to common cartridges. It came out in 1959 and we have a guy at hunting camp that still has his that he bought new back in the 60's. Since I've been hunting with him he has dropped two large mule deer each with one shot. It performs pretty similary to the 7mm rem mag but it's not nearly as common. One thing I would be concerned with if I was buying an older used rifle in this caliber is if the barrel is shot out. So if you want something different than the average joe it would be a good one to pick up. Me personaly I would get something more common like the 7mm rem mag. Keep in mind too it will recoil about the same as a .30-06 but a little sharper/faster. I think you were looking for a comfortable rifle to shoot so this wouldn't really be a low recoil rifle.
