Bolt action vs. Lever action 30.06 vs. 35 rem.

I was looking for an all around hunting rifle and was looking at a Marlin 336 in .35 Rem. Many of my friends carry this into the woods. i would like to know about what the .35 Rem. and 30.06 compare to eachother.

Also how do the Bolt aciton vs. Lever action compare.
Im just looking for a general concensus. I know that this is more of a preference idea. But i am just curious.

By the way i would be hunting in the Northeast for deer. But i also like to know that i have extra oompf just in case should the need arise. A good friend of mien was stalked by a bear and the bear got within 20ft before he even noticed the bear was there.
 
If I was limited to only one rifle, it would be a bolt action 30-06.
The "06" will take any game in North America. The same can't be said for the 35 Remington. You can hunt anything from varmints to elk with the "06".
 
The .30-'06 is both more powerful and more flexible than the .35 Remington, although the latter is fine for eastern white tail deer and black bear. The lever action is a bit faster, but its weight advantage has been cancelled out by light .30-'06 rifles, even though they have more recoil.

Another good possibility is a light weight bolt rifle in .308, which is slightly less powerful than .30-'06 but still ahead of the .35. There are also a couple of lever actions available in .308.

Best of Both Worlds

The bolt-action in .30'06 will be more powerful than a .35 Remington levergun, and will shoot flatter. BUT, it will be quite a bit slower, unless you're quite good with bolt actions.

Why not get the best of both worlds and buy a Winchester '95 lever action with a box magazine? These will chamber .30'06, and I believe Winchester is making them again. Unless I dreamed it, I saw one of these in .30'06 at the gun store recently, and I loved the way it handled. Teddy Roosevelt used this rifle, though the "big medicine" .405 WCF he used may be a *bit* much for ordinary hunting.
 
Preference...a 30-06 or 35 Remmington

I thing the Marlin 336 and the Winchester 94 are the only rifles you can get a 35 Remmington in.

[30-06]A BOLT ACTION IN MORE ACCURATE AND EASIER TO CLEAN. All you need to do is remove the bolt and put the rod through from the back. I have got 1/4inch groups with my 30-06. You will be lucky to get a 4 inch group out of a lever action.
 
Defintly go for the Marlin in 35 Rem. Nothing better for whitetails, and it plays hell on black bear as well. If you are worried about getting charged, then you want a lever gun over a bolt action, the lever is ALOT faster for the average fellow to operate.

The lever gun is also handy to carry in the woods. It is light, and the flat sides make in more comfortable with a sling, and it is just old fashioned American Cool!

That said, I have a 30-06 that I hunted with for several years, while a few buddies used 35 remingtons. I always felt overgunned for the ranges we were hunting. The deer they shot always went down fast with very minimal meat damage.
