Bolt-action Tactical Rifle in .308 Recommendations

Looking to add a bolt-action tactical rifle in .308 cal to my collection. Been looking at the following options. I have loads of experience with handguns and ARs, but not "high-caliber" bolt-rifles. Any and all recommendations you'd give a Newbie would be much appreciated. All but the Savage seem to be in the same price range. Thanks in advance!

Get a Savage. Doesn't have to be with the McMillan stock though...

Here is my latest outing with my 10FCP with Choate Tactical Stock.
10-shots @ 100 yards. 150gr Hornady SST ammo.

Depending on what you wanted to spend... and how serious you are about long range shooting.. there are many many options.

Of the ones you listed I would probably take the Kimber. I have shot it, and it shot very well.

That being said.... depending on the coin you wanted to spend, I would look to companies like G.A. Precision and get a legitimate copy of one of our military's rifles, or one of their "production" rifles, or build a custom one to your personal specs.

Short of using a boutique company as them... I would look into buying a bare action, and finding a good gun smith to blue print and build you a rifle off the action.

Like I said.... these are the BEST options, might not be in your personal budget. Rifles from companies like G.A.P. and alike, or a custom built rifle will deliver some top tier results.

If you are looking for something more casual, I would look at the rifles you listed.

If you are serious about long range shooting however.... Optics and the right reloading equipment are probably more important than the rifle.

A quality scope will run you almost as much as a solid rifle, and reloading equipment you want to be precise as possible, reloading has gotten so advanced its practically a separate hobby from shooting these days.

Like I stated... long range shooting is not a cheap venture by any means. Something to think about, not trying to scare you away.. just don't want to see anyone drop the money on a well built rifle, and feed it bad ammo or a mount a cheap scope and be displeased.

If you wanted to stay under 400-500 yards... almost any production rifle set up for such a thing will deliver decent results. I have owned Savage's and Remingtons that shot Sub-MOA even with cheap ammo.
 
I love my remington 700, cant say anything bad about it, and i would put it toe to toe with just about anything in its class, with upgrades from H&S i can easily shoot good groups at 700yds..... as for Savage, yes they are great for the money, and are awsome shooters, but i much prefer to pay for better fit/ finish...cant speak for the others

I love my remington 700, cant say anything bad about it, and i would put it toe to toe with just about anything in its class, with upgrades from H&S i can easily shoot good groups at 700yds..... as for Savage, yes they are great for the money, and are awsome shooters, but i much prefer to pay for better fit/ finish...cant speak for the others

There are several good rifles on the market today and while I have no experience with some of them, I do have experience with the Savage and have to say that it's one of the best.

If you take the called flier out of the group, it measures at 0.515. The flyer opens the group to 0.890. Not bad for a sub-$800.00 rifle.
 
I just ordered a Remington SPS Varmint in a .308.....Heavy barrel,it's supposed to be ready to pick up tomorrow,I had the barrel trimmed to 18".....They are a great rifle,I got mine brand new for $595.00......They are about the best action overall rifle around for the price,thats just my opinion tho......I have never owned a Savage,but I am told they are the best out of the box gun on the market today by a lot of people....My 700's might not compete with the Savages out of the box,but after tweaking at the range they are just as good,if not better........But then I am always looking for an excuse to shoot....Good luck with your decision,and have fun...:)
 
Don't get to wrapped up in the "tactical" moniker. IME, adding the word tactical to a gun adds $$$'s to it's price without adding much function. About any of the varmint (heavy taper) or bull barreled guns from any of the manufactures will shoot and function pretty much identical to thier tactical labled brothers. Many times for substantially less money. YMMV.
