bolt action question

so before the prices of these get retarded i was going to a good bolt action but don't wanna pay AR prices. i dont really know nothing about them except the mosin i have can shoot 4" groups at 300 yards :) so my question is does those R-700's still any good? or what would be better to get?
 
IMHO one of the best values (aka:"sleeper") is actually one of the "economy" bolt-action rifles - The Marlin X7 or the Stevens 200 - which have street prices under $400.

For your $$$, a buyer gets an accurate, dependable rifle at a cost low enough to mount a decent scope and buy plenty of ammo.

I just recently got a Remington 700 SPS Tactical. I paid just under $600 for it. and it seems like an EXCELLENT gun. With that said, I've made it a bit of a project gun and have put about the same amount into upgrades and accessories for it.

I have been reading a lot of reviews about the Ruger American and people seem to be very happy with them. My friend just bought one in .308. It seems like a really nice little rifle for only $350... with a detachable magazine (I wish my R-700 had one).

If they come out with a Ruger American in .223, I will probably pick one up. I would like to get one anyways... but I have 308 covered with my 700... and I don't REALLY want to get into yet another caliber... If I do, it'll probably be something like the 270. I wouldn't mind getting into 30-06, but a rifle that light isn't going to be fun to shoot 30-06 out of.

So yes, the R-700 is still a nice rifle, but if you just want to get started in bolt guns - there are less expensive options that will serve you well in the mean time. I only went with the 700 because I specifically wanted all of those aftermarket upgrade options... otherwise I probably would have gone with the Ruger or a Savage. The Ruger Gunsite Scout was very high on my list as well.. but was pricey. I'd still like one though...
 
Check out CZ rifles. The American series are great rifles. Not super cheap, though for what they are the price of them is an awesome value. I have a 527 American in .221 Rem Fireball. It looks beautiful. Shoots like a laser beam, carries like a feather. I saw one in .22 Hornet at the local gun store the other day for under $600. Add $200 for a decent scope, and mounts. Yes it is up there on the price scale.

Ultimate value. Savage Axis.
 
For what you probably paid for the MN and the cost of ammo for it, you should be happy with what you have.....considering you got a darn good shooter!
 
I would vote for Savage. You get a lot of accuracy for a good price. Actually, not sure if you can do better without going custom.
 
i bought the Mosin at old price lol "$90" an i was lucky to get a Ex-Sniper version so we built around that an are shooting Hornaday Vintage Match Ammo. an ya the price we dished out to make the mosin do that is quite a chunk of change. an the rifle i seen that did impress me was a Marlin X-7 in 30-06 i think it was around $400.

I'm sure you can find good deals on a Rem. 700 varmint, and upgrade as time goes on. The action & heavy barrel is the same 700P which is a tack driver. What caliber are you looking at.
 
Savage or R700...
If you want the ability to upgrade stocks, barrels, etc.
Savage gets the nod from me, mostly because I can change barrels/calibers myself in minutes. So, I usually just "build" my own...find a cheap rifle, use just the action and get rid of the rest.

If you're just looking for an accurate rifle and not concerned about upgrading, etc. then look at the Ruger American for under $350.
 
the caliber i was thinkin about is gonna be bigger then a 06 since the ballistics comming out of my Mosin with the Match ammo is more then a 06 i was figuring maybe a 300 win mag or a 7mm Rem mag?
 
And you need a "bigger" caliber, for what?

I'm assuming you're trying to kill something other than steel, 'cause you don't need a 300WM to do that unless you're shooting past 1000 yards...and even then....

Define your purpose better, and you'll get more specific advice.
 
well why not? might as well buy one now while there cheap instead of wanting one later when there selling for AR prices later. an since im in illinois it wont be to long before that prolly happens.
 
I used to tout the rem700 pretty avidly but I must say that my whole family is in love with Ruger M77s now. slightly more accurate, safer designs, better QC, and Ruger stands by their guns 100% so if anything ever goes wrong they'll take it back and make it right. they all have a stupid proprietary ring base for mounting scopes on but they are solid rifles. I'd highly recommend them to anyone.

just about the worst accuracy you could expect from a ruger M77 is still double the accuracy of your mosin nagant.
 
Personally, if you have your heart on a Remington 700, I would look for a older one. Back before Freedom Group took over. To me they are better made back then. I have a early 90's ADL in .270 and my dad has a early 70's BDL in .270. His to me is a nicer rifle. Have you thought about a Savage Axis? It's surprisingly accurate and light.
 
Great article in a recent Field & Stream magazine about 5 rifles under $500 which are great out of the box.

Ruger American, Marlin x7, T. C. Venture, Weatherby Vanguard S2, and I can't remember the last but it was NOT a Rem 700.

As someone else suggested, if I were looking for a Rem 700 or Win Model 70, I would look for an older used one. Better quality and better price than the newer versions.

For those in the group listed in F&S, I would vote for the Venture and the Weatherby as I have 1 or each and they are great shooters.
 
I think the best deal going is the Vangard2. Mine in .257 is a cold barrel tack driver. Dont expect much on a hot barrel, but for what I hunt with it, the barrel will never get hot.
 
I have the same rifle as reynolds357, the weatherby vangaurd S2 is a really good rifle at a very decent price and is gauranteed to shoot an inch at 100 yrds with premium ammo, mine is a .257 weatherby as well and it shoots really good!
 
Customaquatics, it is the OLDER remington 700s you are thinking about, its a trigger problem, google it and you will find all you want to read about it
