bolt action problem

the bolt on my 30-06 will not move. it will not budge as if has some kind of lock on it. anyone know why this might be and how to fix it?

It's the safety, be dang careful, slide it off and bolt should open, unless there's a cartridge that has totally shut her down, and in that case take it to a Smith!:)

What kind of gun is it? What position is the bolt in now where it won't move? Open or closed? Were you shooting when it happened or did you just get done cleaning it? Not much info to work with here and you're only going to get a lot of guesses without the right info to work with.

savage 110e 30-06. shot a few rounds through it a couple of months ago, no problem. pull it out today and the bolt will not move out of the closed position. will not move at all

The safety would be my guess too... pretty strange problem though. I'd start by taking off the stock to look through the magazine, unless your savage has a detachable box. If nothing else I'd try dropping some gun oil down the barrel, up the magazine, and around the bolt itself and try to open it then.

On a Savage, pushing the safety all the way forward locks the bolt. Put the safety in the mid position and you should be able to work the bolt.

Another thing that will lock the bolt is the forward action screw. If you've tightened it too much it will bind the bolt, making it impossible to unlock. I had this problem with a re-stocked rifle and the action screw was one-thread too long. When you tightened the action screw, you'd lock the bolt. I had my 'smith take two threads off the screw and everything is okay with it now.

May be a stressed action due to overpressure, in that case your lucky to be alive.
But more than likely its the safety or a screw binding like previously posted.
