Bolt action or auto loader

My next rifle is going to be in .308 and a 90% of the time range gun. I am trying to decide between a bolt-action Maybe a Savage 110 or a Rem 700, or a Auto loader (toss up between G3 clone or Springfield M1A) Now will the Auto loader give me the same accuracy as the bolt action for 100-300yards. In the North East, shots past 300yards aren't that prevelent. The fact that the auto loaders will be tougher to get later on is kinda playing into it. I want to know though if I get the M1A for instance can it get me really good groups at 100yards. I am an average skilled shooter with only some experience. i will also be using this rifle for hunting after i graduate and my situation stabilizes more. so the G3 is not a hunting rifle but it is still in the running for comparison and the heck of it.

My price is pretty flexible to accomadate both types of rifles so i am looking more for teh ccuracy and longevity of the rifle. i like the M1A because it is very utilitarian you can pop in a five round mag and go hunting or a 20 rounder and you have a battle rifle for those SHTF type scenarios.

Your thoughts please.

i'd say that the M1A it's the best if you are not going to put a Scope on the Rifle, but if you are i would say go with the Bolt-Action, you would git the best accuracy with a Scope from it. but in the end it all up to what you would like.

Hmmm...you did say "your thoughts please". Okay then.

I'd say choose your rifle to suit its intended purpose. The M-1A would be a good thing to have in case of SHTF or if you intend to shoot competitively in the appropriate class. But, if hunting is on the agenda, I'd say get the bolt-action. The M-1A is a pretty heavy rifle and I wouldn't want to lug one up and down very many mountains. Another advantage of the bolt gun is the price. I don't think you can touch a US made M-1A for less than $1000, and for that kind of money, you could buy a Remington Model 700 (recognized as the most accurate right-out-of-the-box factory rifle you can buy) and outfit it with a Leupold VariX-III scope, and still have money left over for ammo.

But then again, maybe you just LIKE the M-1A...in which case I would say "GO FOR IT!"

Good luck, happy shooting.

All depends on the $$$ you want to part with. If you're as stingy as I am and don't like used stuff, take a long hard look at the Savage 110. Add a decent 4X (I'm partial to Leupold, but that's just me) and you've got a good shootin iron for not much $$. There are plenty of good (meaning you have to actually inspect chamber, bore, etc) used boltguns and semis out there as well.

Personally I love my Savage, but take a look at how badly you would want the M1A, especially with it's weight for hunting.
