Bolt Action Mossberg

Not sure of their historical origin. I have a 16 gauge Mossberg bolt gun with a 2 shot detach magazine that my dad gave me from his youth. I'm 41, and he is 73, so they go back a ways. Is yours a detach magazine as well?
I really enjoy mine - first gun I hunted with.
 
The Mossberg bolt action shotguns were very popular as a first shotgun, for about every kid in my area, back in the 60's. They were very dependable, safe, and above all affordable. Most of the guys I grew up with used them with a poly choke. I still see them at about every gunshow I go to. They still don't seem to bring in a very high price. I've seen them in near mint condition for under $150.00. The only problem I can ever recall anyone having, was you had to take your time feeding the rounds or they wouldn't feed straight. I shot my first deer, cottontail rabbit, grouse, and pheasant with my hand-me-down 20 ga. Mossberg bolt. Traded up to a rem 870 when I got home from the service. That was before I realized that I would miss every gun I sold or traded off. Good luck with the gun and good shooting.

I have a bolt action 20 with 2 shot detachable magazine. I love it, very light and the grip is perfect for my hand. It has a long barrel, I use it for upland game and groundhogs that are in or close to my out buildings.

I picked mine up 20 years ago for 17 dollars, I have seen them at local dealers and garage sales 50-75 .
 
In 1962 I had a bolt action Mossberg 16ga. I hunted with all the time. About as simple & dependable as a gun gets. Can't think of any thing bad to say except the obvious...action is not as fast as a pump. But for some hunting that does not really matter.

BTW, best of my memory one of the stores that sold them was Sears......at least in Kentucky.
 
In the '80s, when I was in the navy, my roommate had a Mossberg 12ga bolt. I guess it was a poly-choke. If I'm remembering right, you just kind of screwed it in and out to whatever choke setting you wanted. I used to borrow it to go rabbit hunting and I loved it.

Remembering back on that... I should've tried to buy it from him.

Yes, mine was also a poly-choke. I think the poly-choke was standard on all bolt action Mossberg's shotguns. Now that I think of it, the poly-choke seemed to work OK....wonder why they are not around anymore?
 
I have 2 bolt action mossbergs, .20 ga and a .410. Although they both have screw on chokes they are not poly-chokes. Each one is marked full, cyl, etc.
As far as poly-chokes not being around, they still are. Try poly-choke.com.

Had a 16 and a 410 years ago ... the 50s and they were from an Uncle then. Neither had box mags, just stuff 'em in. 16 had an adjustible choke and 410 had exchangeable chokes that screwed on the outside. Metal finger grooves on the pistol grip. Good shooters if a bit slow. Stolen, along with more, when I was 'vacationing' near Danang in '65.

I have one still that I bought for $49 from Sears as an "all around" firearm at age 18. The model is 195K, poly-choke, 2 round detachable mag and pretty nice wood for the price.

Unfortunately, I had it drilled to accept a scope mount. I see samples in the same condition as mine sans scope mount for up to $250. Didn't know I had a "classic". :o
 
Yes, I had the 410 for a few years and hunted rabbits with it. I thought it was unusal in 410 until another one came by me. They were nice shotguns
