I don't have a center fire rifle yet, but am researching getting one for all around use. Hunting, long range target, etc. My question is what is better in terms of a magazine - detachable or not, or is is just preference?
Maybe it's because my first '06 was an old 1917 Enfield, but I've always preferred that style of magazine. Never have been particularly emotionally comfortable with a detachable magazine on a serious hunting rifle. (No problem with the AR or Mini--go figure.) Maybe I'm just a traditionalist.
Only once in all my years of deer hunting have I ever needed more than one or two shots. The idea of a "quick reload" has never arisen. And in target shooting there's certainly no need for the detachable box.
However, if the idea of having a spare magazine available appeals to you, all well and good.
Now, I do prefer a hinged floorplate, since it makes unloading a rifle much safer. Making a rifle without one, to me, is the same sort of cheapening as not having vent windows on a car.
The one piece of advice I can give you is if you decide to get a detachable mag DO NOT GET A REMINGTON DM! They have had all sorts of problems with them that they can not fix. They actually stopped offering them on a few rifles because of complaints. The Remington 700 it's self is a great rifle and they make one of the best aftermarket DM floorplates for it. It's a HS Precision unit that is stainless steel with a matte black finish works great. The 700 BDL(hinged floorplate) is a great rifle that would do you well no matter what you wanted to do. There are many different variations so you might want to research and see which fits what you want to do best. What type of hunting and how long range were you looking to shoot?
Personally I don't have any DM bolt guns. I don't see the need for them as far as my shooting goes. As far as your question which is better, I think it boils down to personal preference. They both work fine, if you have the right unit. DM gives you the option of changing ammo or ammo type quickly by just popping a different mag in. But I only use one type of ammo and I have an AR for rapid fire
My preference is a detachable magazine but only because I need a rifle handy living in the country but due to circumstances don't want to leave a fully loaded rifle where small hands could find it. Without that condition though I'd stick with a fix magazine with a floorplate.
Having owned several rifles with detachable mags the only one I would recommend without qualification is the one that I currently own -- a Sako Model 75. The Tikka was acceptable but couldn't be top fed while the Remington was a shoddy piece of work IMHO.:barf:
SysRq, yes the HS Precision is a fix and a good replacement at that. If Celt, my riflesmith, reads this he will also tell you that they are a very good DM set up. The one thing is that it doesn't have the same quirky releases so the cut outs in the stock won't be needed and might look unsightly. But for reliability I would live with it. Or you can fill it in and paint it. Either way the HS Precision unit is the way to go.
