Bolt Action Choices - What Would You Have Done?

Among my various semi-automatic rifles, I have an AR-15 fluted, floated, flattop in .223 with a 24" barrel, a Browning BAR Mark II BOSS in .30-06, and a M1 Garand in .30-06.

My family of lever actions include a Winchester 1894 in .30-30 and a Marlin 1895 in .45-70.

My family of bolt action rifles consists of a Ruger 77/22 rimfire and 4 Remington 700 Senderos with 26" barrels in .22-250, .25-06, 7 mm Rem. Mag., and .300 Win. Mag.

If you could exchange one or two of these bolt action rifles for another caliber, what would it be or do you like my choices???

Man, you are pretty much set. Not sure how you use your rifles, but if I was to trade in one of your bolt actions, I would probably get rid of one of the Magnums (probably the 300 Rem Mag) and buy a lighter weight rifle. Maybe a Winchester 70 or something like that. The Senderos are definitely accurate but kinda heavy and the barrels are long. Maybe a .308 in 22 or 24" barrel. Great for hunting, easy to carry, lots of ammo and still has the ability to reach out accurately.

I like to shoot using the practical, common rounds. You already have a .223, so I'd drop the .22-250 and .25-06. I'd look for something in .243 or .270.

Keep the .22 --- it's cheap and fun Keep the 7mm Rem Mag and the .300 Rem Mag. They're great rounds.

If you really just like shooting - the 17 HMR might be worth looking into.

I have a T/C Contender in .22 and .223 with 14" barrels and an Encore frame but I haven't bought any barrels yet.

For my first barrel, I was thinking about a .45-70 barrel but maybe I should think about a .308 barrel or something else in the 30 caliber range.

I'm not going to sell any guns ... never have.

I would consider adding something but I'm up to 42 guns now so I'm pretty much done.

My thoughts are similar to Tide's. Get rid of the heavy 25-06 in favor of a lite weight 260 or 6.5 Creedmoore.

Then trade the .300 mag for a 338-06 or 35 Whelen for heavier bullet potential for larger critters.

if it were up to me i would let go of the 25 06 and get a Ruger Tactical Hawkeye .308 I cant remember the name but its Rugers new Sniper Rifle.

I see no .338 cal anything in your arsenal.I would rebarrel the 25-06 to .338-06 AI.It is among the easiest cartridges to rechamber from a L/A.No special process' to get the brass. They just plain shoot with mild recoil and true 400 yd. hunting rifle.

I have a hard time parting with any gun. So unless I had a strong dislike for one of them I would keep them and maybe add something like a .17, 204, or .338. I would probably go with the .17 first, you have the others mostly covered.

Hell that's easy .270 winchester!!!!!!;) And NO don't trade what you already have. The .270 would compliment those,,,:)

(maybe the 25-06);)

A .243, 6XC, .260rem, 6x47Lapua, 6.5x47lapua. Your missing a nice low recoil short action med-long range cartridge, particularly in the .308 casing family :D

I too have a quite a few guns and was asking myself the other day what I could possibly want. The problem I came up with was that if you buy a gun that does something only as good any of your other guns is taking ammo money from the guns you already have. So in short if you have an actual need instead of a perceived possibility of being needed think real hard before you buy it or you may do what I have done and end up with guns bought as users that ended up as safequeens.
Just the other day I was thinking that I needed a lighweight bolt action varmint rifle, but then I thought about it and realized that my heavy barrel sako varmint in 22-250 and my AR15 actually covered any possible need quite well. Said rifle wouldn't have been used like a rented mule like any good gun should be and that in my mind would have been a misallocation of my finite resources.

great collection, IMO. I would tweak it a little. The bar I would have in a 300 short magnum to upgrade from 30-06. I might have chosen a 7mm-30-30 hyubrid, like the 7-30 waters in the 94. The bolts I would have in 223, maybe skip the 25-06 and go for a 270 or 7mm short mag, then, as you did, a 300 magnum. Again, maybe a short mag instead of belted.

At one time, .45-70 bolt rifles could be had. I would at some point have a large bore bolt, between .350 and 458 in size. I would probably take a 35 whelen. Sure, this is sort of a duplication of the marlin, but not in my mind.

There isn't anything on this continent that the 35 whelen won't work well on, it's pretty near the equal of most 45-70 loads, and superior to many. Even a stray rodeo bull that is digging up your tulips would be toast.

Don't laugh, I actually have had stray cows running through my neighborhood. Once, a zebra even got loose and ran for days.

I have nothing against the guns, but I would maybe tweak the cartridges a bit, and these would be good, for a reloader.
