BOBTAIL Modification on 1911

Shooting my Kimber Pro-Carry is a dream for me! Flat mainspring housing is fine. Never felt the need for an arched housing.

But...

Saw the Ed Brown custom Bobtail on the Caspian frame a couple of years ago and became intrigued. I got to handle one in a shop some time ago and was quite impressed!

I see some advantages:
1. Improved concealability without reduced finger purchase.
2. Reduced weight.
3. Less ribcage gouging while holstered.
4. Possible improvement in grip indexing.

Disadvantages:
1. Re-learning natural point of aim for new grip.

A recent perusal of Brownell's catalog revealed a jig and replacement housing that would make this modification much more feasible for me. Hence, my renewed interest.

I read George Hill's comments regarding his disappointment with the modification on his S.A. I wonder who else may have experience with this modification and what impressions resulted?

Ditto

Doesn't work for me. The gun seems to jump on firing, and my strong hand palm takes a beatin...this mod's just not for me. Felt great before I fired it though...

That Bobtail really looked neat.
But it was the fastest way to ruin a brand new Springfield TRP Professional Model...
With Ashley Express Sights!

I have 2 full size Wilsons, both with arched MS housings, and another Colt full size. I also shoot a CQB compact and a Kimber Elite carry with OM size frames and flat housings. I recently purchased a Bob Tail Commander from Ed Brown.

I passed the 2500 round mark recently, and other than the initial "feel" in my hand being different, I have had no difficulty going back and forth between any of the above. I can tell no difference in point of aim.

I always viewed the relationship between the positioning of the fingers on the frontstrap and the frontstrap to the target as being the primary factors in the "point".

The housing on the Bob Tail begins its taper at the same distance from the top of the grip safety as where the OM size butt stops completely. That never seemed to change the pointability for me either.

I did order the Brown with a heavier trigger than either of the Wilsons, as I plan to carry it. The Wilsons are both 3.5, and the Brown is 4.5. I use a timer for all practice sessions and my times are almost as good with the Brown as with the other two.

Maybe I just don't know what I'm doing! :-)

I've seen this on the Ed Brown Commander and it looks awesome. I am surprised that it uncomfortable, etc... by looking at it I was reminded of the Boot Grip on some revolvers which make them concealable and comfortable...
