"Bob" the hammer spur??

Kentucky Rifle

Over on the S&W Forum someone is always saying that the new "MIM" parts that Smith uses are ~98% as strong as tool steel. (If that's so, I wonder why a tool steel "upgrade" is offered by the Performance Center?) Anyway, if one wanted to "bob" one of those MIM hammers, I wonder what it would structurally do? Think the bobbed hammer would be weaker? Opinions please??

Thanks,

Not weaker, only lighter. I cut most of mine OFF. Great part about this is, you can still thumb cock the weapon, de-cocking is another matter. I de-cock with both hands. :)

KR... I will send that photo of the S&W M632, 3" bbl, 32 mag, Airweight soon....

Well, I am sure S&W would advise against it for liabiluity reasons. I am not sure about how the newer and cheaper (sorry, bias showing through) parts would react to such a modification. I would suggest that a bobbed hammer be done in conjunction with altering the gun to DA only. Having SA capability encourages cocking the stubby hammer and eventually you will want to lower it without shooting and that becomes very dangerous. Had a M58 bobbed and made DA with an action job and I never miss SA at all.

If you gotta bob the hammer, go buy a used hammer, fit that and bob it. That way if you want to restore the gun to sell, it's back to original.
