Blueing the bolt

I have a Mauser 98 that I am thinking about slow rust blueing the bolt and bolt handle. My question is how will the blue hold up to use, will it wear quickly?

Hummmmmmmmmmmm...........thats a new one on me. I would tend to think it would decrease the headspace if anything, and IF so it would be less than .0001

As for wearing quickly, yes it does in the areas where metal comes into contact with other metal. You will have wear streaks in it in no time. Just blue the bolt knob and handle.

You could blue the bolt handle and body, but keep the front locking lugs from being blued. Do not blue the extractor. I had my whole bolt coated with KG Gunkote and after only a few times of working the bolt the extractor is showing wear streaks.

Very sound advice.

Rust bluing requires the removal of rust, even though the rust will "grow" the dimensions the removal of that rust will cause the part to shrink. Then when you work the bolt the bluing will wear off and leave behind bare metal, once again increasing headspace. Probably not enough to worry about in a Mauser, but it won't make a bad situation any better.

Don't mess with the bolt. I parkerized a mauser bolt once... which doesn't require polishing and removing metal. I did a small bit of metal removal (I thought it wasn't enough to make it measurable, but apparently it was) as I knew the parkerizing process could shrink the headspace by a couple of thousandths. The gun is safe to shoot, per go and no-go gauges, but it doesn't shoot the same.
