blueing/blackening stainless steel chemical question

I have a cold blackening chemical just for for stainless steel. What can be used to stop the reaction. I did my stainless rifle. Took real nice blackend, cleaned it and oiled real good and after a couple weeks in it's case came out looking red, like surface rust what happens?

I'm not sure what chemical you used. Professional gunsmiths use a modified caustic hot blue that can blue stainless steel, and the gun is rinsed with water, after the bath, then dipped into water displacing oil. The water washes away any excess chemical, and the oil strips the water, and lubricates the gun, stopping rust.
