Blueing and Engraving

I've got an old (1517--) S&W Pre-27 that was given to me by my father in law. He is a retired Chicago Police Officer, and carried it often on the mean streets. The finish is all scratched (not to the bare metal), and there is holster wear on the end of the barrel and on the cylinder. This gun will never be sold, so I am not worried about the collectors value. Also, he attempted a "home re-blue" on the sideplate, not doing a very good job.

My questions: Can anyone recommend a good smith that can do a nice high polish blue? I'd like to do it myself, but this would be my first and I'm not too keen on screwing this one up. Also, I am contemplating having some engraving work done. Would this be something done before or after the re-blue? And, can anyone recommend a good engraver?

This gun is shot alot, but I take very good care of it. This is a gun that will be passed on for generations. Another question... Can someone tell me what kind of grips were original and maybe post a picture? Thanks for the help!

A couple pics...

I'm torn. To me, that gun looks great the way it is--the finish wear and the botched reblue are parts of its story. That story is important to you and to the person you will pass it to one day.

Still, a nicely engraved revolver is a beautiful thing...

Can you picture a Chicago Cop working Tac, at almost 300 pounds, wearing this on his belt? :) And yes, with those grips!

I agree on it telling a story, but I'd like to add to it just a little.

Thanks for the comments, keep 'em coming!

I think I agree with Dfariswheel. Call S&W and explain what you've got and what you'd like to have done. I'm sure they would be interested as well in the story behind the gun.

Good Luck.

Depending on the exact age of your revolver S&W may not do the job. I asked them about refinishing an old revolver and they told me they wouldn't work on anything made before 1958. They just don't have the parts if something was needed.

Thanks for the comments everyone, I'll be calling S&W tomorrow to find out what they can do for me.

As for the grips, do these look like the originals?

I found them in a box in my father-in-law's basement yesterday. They fit perfect, and look real nice too!

Pardon my blurry picture, that was taken with my phone... :barf:
