Blued Revolver Cylinder Carbon Ring Cleaning Tips

By the way, I am aware that lead away cloths are bad for blued guns. I have not tried using a white pencil eraser but the concept sounds practical. Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish is bad for bluing too.

I read Hoppes Elite is safe and good for blued guns... Can anyone confirm this?

I've done it on stainless and honestly while I'm like to keep my guns pristine, carbon rings on a revolvers cylinder are just one of those things you cannot avoid and on a blued revolver, you're likely better off just leaving it be.

Howdy

Once you have enough revolvers you will stop worrying about the carbon rings on the front of the cylinder. They always come back again after the first shot and they do not hurt anything.

Or you could shoot Black Powder. For some reason that I have not yet been able to figure out, shooting Black Powder leaves no carbon rings behind on the cylinder face.

Flitz and a brush. Very easy to do. About one out of every four range trips I do this on my stainless guns only just to keep it from layering up too much.

 I clean my the chamber cylinders and barrels religiously.
However, The rings show usage and give the revolver character. I leave them alone.

I don't sweat the carbon rings. I use a little Hoppes #9 and give them a quick scrub with a nylon brush (old toothbrush). They give a revolver some character.

Always going to be up to the owner of the gun, but I do believe that far more damage & wear come to guns via over-zealous cleaning.

Much of this kind of cleaning ends up being just that.

It's a losing battle, just leave them.

Fussing over carbon rings on a cylinder is like fussing over finish wear on a barrel hood. It's inevitable and no matter how much you try to fix it, it will just come back.

Flitz and a brush. Very easy to do.

Flitz is abrasive and will remove the finish of a blued gun.

I don't worry about it for my revolvers, blued, nickel or stainless.
Does anyone here use Fireclean of Fog Lube on their revolvers ?
I wonder if that would lessen the carbon's ability to stick ?

Ok. I used M-Pro 7 to clean a few guns today. It worked very well. It penetrated carbon deposits, loosening most of the rings inside the cylinders of two revolvers. I was able to clean the guns with little effort. Nice product.
