BLR caliber recommendations needed

I really like the rifles, and have three; a 7mm-08 stainless, a 308 White Gold Medallion, and a blue 358 Win.

I want to get a takedown model, and have three choices; 270 Win, 270WSM, and 30-06. Which would you choose and why? All, according to the description, have 22" barrels, and are the stainless/laminate straight stock models.

I already have rifles chambered in the above calibers.

Thanks

All are good cartridges. I have owned 6 or 7 BLRs over the years and now own three; a .325WSM, .358 Win and .450 Marlin. The only BLR I owned and never really cared for was a L/A version. Having owned a couple S/A BLRs prior, I was disappointed about the additional length, weight and longer lever throw.

Knowing that now, I'd suggest the .270WSM version as it's a S/A with 22" barrel vs a L/A. Also a half pound lighter as well. When I got my .325 I was actually wanting a .270WSM (also have one in a Model Seven Whitetail), but was unable to find one. As I said, all are good cartridges and would work well, but I think you should be sure to handle both a L/A and S/A version before perhaps choosing the L/A one. I think you might notice the considerable differences as I did. Good luck!

sorry

The long action BLR's have never looked "right" to me. Sorry. And from what I'm reading here, they might have a different feel too.

But, if I had to choose, must choose, ......I'd get an '06.

Of the three listed I'd take the 270 WSM because it's a short action. The long action BLRs handle like a length of 2x6 board.

Thanks for the replies so far, guys. I haven't had a chance to handle any long-action BLRs yet. Haven't even seen one in the flesh. Maybe there's a reason for that.

I concur with going with the .270 WSM in a BLR. I only have an early BLR in .358 Win. but a good froend of mine bought one of the long action rifles in 7MM Rem. Mag. if IIRC and he felt it was the most unbalanced piece of garbage (his words were a bit more colorful ) he'd ever handled. Like you, I've never ever seen one to handle but I'll take him at his word. Best advice I can give is try and find one for yourself and then make a decision.

I got an update from my LGS guy who told me that he can also get a BLR called the Hog Stalker in 308 with a 18" barrel, stainless/laminate. I might go that route if you guys have any positive input/experience with it. If not that, he can also get the stainless/laminate takedown in 7-08, which I think would be OK with me.

Don't be surprised if you find that whatever takedown model you get doesn't shoot as good as your regular BLRs. They seem to be hit or miss (more often miss) when it comes to accuracy.

I had not heard that. Everything I've read in reviews was very positive regarding their holding zero. Where would I look for that information?

cmdc - just Google accuracy BLR takedown. When I did that I got a mixture of people saying their guns shot just fine and others who said they were only "ok" but not as good as their other BLRs.

Not a matter on need but want !

The three BLR Rifles and calibers you have already cover most any medium to big game you can hunt in NA and then some....in fact , I'd settle on a BLR in just 358 Win. and be done with it ! :D How about a varmint caliber like a .243 or even the .223 or a big bore like the 450 Marlin ?

I have thought of that as well. I already have a 45-70 Marlin Guide Gun, so I think I've got that covered. I'm thinking about one in .243 for sure.

Since my last post I ordered two more BLRs, though. Call me crazy. I went with one called the Hog Stalker, in .308 with 18" barrel. Straight stock, laminate and SS. And then, after agonizing/dithering for a while I ordered one in 270 WSM, also straight stock, laminate.. I was leaning toward the 270 Win, but after reading what some had said about it not being as well balanced as the short actions, I decided against it.

If I go with a .243(and I will at some point), I'll get one in standard configuration with pistol grip and stainless.

I think I've become a collector. Can't wait to see the White Gold Medallion 308. The wood on those is supposed to be beautiful.
