I think it would be a LOT better press to say "ha, we stopped these guys and they were such idiots they can't even figure out how to blow up jet fuel." instead of the "omg, look how close the terrorists came to massively inflicting damage (whether explosive or economic in shutdown), we were THIS close."
The second (which was the case as presented by the US Attorney) serves to scare the public unnecessarily and empower the enemy. "hey Achmad, did you see CNN? We've got the USA scared. They fear our strength. We will fight to the last man, since it only takes one man to inflict such damage to them"
Certainly the story merits national media. There should be plenty of front page space with Paris Hilton in the hoosegow.
