Blackhorn 209?

Ideal Tool

Hello, Is anyone using Blackhorn 209 powder? How is it working for you? Have there ever been any corrosion issues? Thanks alot!

I have only used it to reload cartridges since I don't own a muzzleloader suitable for BH209.

No corrosion issues yet with my blued steel Smith and Wesson model 29 after shooting .44 magnum cases full of BH 209 using a .433 round ball for a projectile.

It sure is an expensive powder though.

Hello, B.L.E. Thanks for reply. That is exactly what I had intended using it for..ctg. loading. I have an original No.3 Ballard in .25-25 Stevens..2" long straight case. Since this is an old cast-action, I have been sticking with Swiss 3FG., But fouling in that tiny bore can be a problem. Someone recommended the Blackhorn 209..They had very good results in a .38-55 & .40-65.
However, In the January 2009 issue of the ASSRA journal..there was a write up on this powder rusting a trapdoor spgf. brl.
What do you use to clean? I have heard Hoppe's #9 is all you need?
Thanks again!

I handled it like smokeless powder. I have heard that it actually is a duplex powder using both nitro powder and a pyrotechnic mixture to help the nitro powder ignite so there may be some water soluable salts left over after shooting.
Also, cases shot with the stuff kind of turn blue inside after time.

It does not leave a whole bunch of fouling in the barrel like black powder does, no need to clean between shots.

I would clean the rifle using the same procedure recommended for smokeless ammo that has corrosive priming.

You clean it with an oil based cleaner.

It does contain sulfur which is corrosive by itself but its extremely forgiving compared to other black powder / subs out there.
