Blackhorn 209 Powder

A friend reported yesterday that he had found that out.
Can't be bothered to wet clean a gun shot with real gunpowder and has dabbled with all the fakes he can find.
 
It's an excellent powder. You can shoot it a lot without having to clean between shots without accuracy deteriorating. I've gotten superb groups with it and until I switched to smokeless in my Savage ML2 this was my black powder substitute of choice. The only "downside" to it is the price but for all the shooting I do in a year it won't break the bank.

I have not gotten around to using this powder as I'm loaded with 777. However, have talked to a number of In-liners that swear by it and rave about it's performance. They claim that even with the higher price, they would not go back to any other substitute. But you know, that's kind of the way it goes and another generation of "Propellant" is in the horizon as another fades into the sunset. .. ;)

Hello, xzqzq. I had thought about using it until I recieved my Fouling Shot from the CBA (Cast Bullet Association). Fellow used it in a mint trapdoor..cleaned with smokeless solvent & put away. few weeks later bore was found to be full of rust and pitted. B.H. has changed wording on container since then that this powder is non-corrosive..it has Potasium Percholrates in it.
 
Isn't potassium perchlorate the main ingredient of corrosive primers?

Heating potassium perchlorate yields pure oxygen and potassium chloride is left behind. Potassium chloride has many of the same properties of sodium chloride (salt). It even tastes like salt which is why its used as a salt substitute for people on low sodium diets.
 
I have been shooting BH209 now for over 2 years.
Some obvious advantages are:
Being able to shoot 20 or more consecutive shots without having to clean the barrel.
No crud ring that occurs with other powders.
Easy loading of projectiles because of minimum powder residue build-up
Clean up using standard gun cleaning solvents = no more water.
Some of the disadvantages:
Harder to ignite, so some in-lines can not use BH209.
Carbon build-up in the nipple/flash channel causing hang fires after multiple shootings.
BH209 is expensive compared to other black powders.
BH209 is not as readily available as other powders.

Any more testimonials for/ against Blackhorn? Most the info I've hunted up would indicate it's the greatest substitute ever made.

I would just go out and buy some and try it but Blackhorn recommends CCI 209M primers. Unfortunately I've not found anyone willing to sell single trays. So, if I or my rifle don't like it I'm stuck with 950 odd primers I have no use for.

To put it another way, has anyone used this powder with the recommended primer and NOT liked it and if so why? (price doesn't worry me, I'd be lucky if I could shoot a canister a year)

BTW, shooting this in a TC Impact.
 
I use Winchester W209 shotgun primers in my Omega with BH209 and have never had any issues. I personally know 2 others that use W209 primers with BH209, also without issues. Give them a try, you should be able to pick up 100 for under $4.00.
 
Since the TC Encore and TC Omega take the same breach plug, you will not have any problems using BH209.

Also, after Ohio's BP deer season, I'll try out the BH209. Will also experiment with the Rem Premier STS shotgun primer as I've got a couple cards of them.

Per the wording on the primer box:
The STS's were designed for more positive ign., even with smaller grained and hard -to- ignite powders....We'll see.

Also, They are also made of Kleanbore non-mercuric, non corrosive priming mix....

I've used them with 777 and AP and like the way the fire channels in the nipple and breech plug don't get plugged as much as some of the other primers I've used.
 
I don't have an inline....but I do use BH209 in my cartridges...it is probly the best powder for target loads in a 500S&W. Seems to work more consistant than Trailboss and it even gives some smoke.

I also use it in my remington 58 when I load 45colts in the conversion cylinder.
