BlackHills Ammo?

If you can't find it locally, Black Hills will sell to you direct.
After years of reading in gun magazines how great it was, I tried some in .223 & 9mm.
I found it to be very expensive and not as accurate (in my guns) as some cheaper stuff.
Just my .02

I've used their 55 g softpoint and 62 g FMJ and had no problems - as accurate as most other stuff I've tried (short of match-grade ammo).

The 52gr. HPBT match (blue box) is also real good and only $100 more than the 55gr. milspec.

62gr. is also real nice, much more accurate in my gun than the IMI Israeli stuff.

Good Luck.

For a very long time I used Federal .223 Match in my AR. Then I tried Black Hills, and the difference was negligible. But the cost savings wasn't.

I've been using their `Kesselring?' (52gr Speer BTHP) load for quite some time now for shooting `pasture poodles' with my Browning A-bolt `Varminter' and have been very pleased with how it shoots. I also use their 55 FMJ and softpoint loads in my DR-200 and don't have any `quibbles'. The Speer BTHPs seem to do quite a bit better job on `pasture poodles' than their `original' 52gr HPs and compared to my 50gr Ballistic tipped handloads they give the `pasture poodles' `reversable fur coats' everytime rather than just `blowing a big hole out the backside'. I've tried quite a few different makers .223 HPs and keep going back to the Black Hills ones for my `factory' ammo. (The fact that I also get a box of 50 for $10 is `icing on the cake'. {GRIN!} And the further fact that I seem to allways end up with Lake City brass for my handloads is even nicer. {BSE GRIN!})

On another `note'... I've *also* found that the Black Hills .308 ammo is *also* quite good, too. Both their 165 gr and 168gr `match' ammo performs quite well through mu other Browning A-bolt `Varminter'. However... As *both* of my Brownings also happen to have the B.O.S.S. attachment I *could* also get them to shoot fairly well with *almost* anything I wanted to put through them within `reason'. *You* may not find them to be what it is that *you* rifle `likes' and may have to spend some time searching for what it likes to `digest'. *If* it does like the Black Hills product and shoots to your `expectations' then it's worth what you pay for it and unless you take up handloading, or already are handloading, I don't think you'll have any problems with it over the `long run'. They do have some pretty good QC.

As for *where* to get it... If you can't find someplace that already stocks it just go to their Web Site and pick up the necessary info and go have a talk with one of the places you've been buying ammo at and have them order it in for you. If you are lucky enough to have the appropriate `letterhead' and are willing to buy in sufficient quantity they'll sell it to you directly. I was lucky enough in that my favorite gunshop was also a LEO `dealer' and he stocked it for several different `local' agencies and was willing to just let my orders `ride' along with the ones he made for them. (It also helps that I also order by the case, too. {GRIN!} [And *if* you're thinking that I shoot quite a bit of .223 and .308 you are quite right! {CHORTLE!} I've been known to go through 500 rounds, or more, a weekend at times.])

For the extra price of the Black Hills Match in .308 Win I was not all that impressed. My IMR 4895 with a 168gr Sierra HPBT MK handload Shot much better from my rifle. Maybe the .223 is better I don't know
My two cents worth.
