Blackhawk in 41 Mag?

I need more to do around here.

I've been looking at a 41 magnum Blackhawk, 4-5/8" barrel, for $359, new. I've shot .357 Blackhawks, and .44 magnum Super Blackhawks. I'm not recoil sensitive with handguns -- I kind of like it, really -- but have never shot a .41 magnum (too far away from anybody that rents, and don't know anybody that has one). How will it compare to the above two guns, both of which were the same barrel length? Many thanks.

Right on! I have that .41 Blackhawk in that 4 5/8" bbl length. Very handy gun! The blast and recoil is about the same as the .44 mag Super Blackhawk in the same bbl length (the .41 is ever-so-slightly less in general, but the Blackhawk is less massive than the Super): not necessarily for beginners, but by no means unmanageable.

I got mine used but lovely (about 4-5 years ago) for $239.

I find the .41 mag to be like the .38 spl in the accuracy department, which is high praise indeed. I think you'll enjoy the Blackhawk, should you buy it.

The recoil from a 41 Magnum and 44 Magnum are about the same. The 41's weigh a bit more, so they feel like it's less.

The 41 Magnum also shoots a bit faster and flatter than the 44 Magnums, from the same gun platform. Forty-one's are also stronger guns, so they can handle higher pressures. The 44 does not distinguish itself as a superior cartridge until the bullets get over the 265 grain mark. That is were the 44 takes off. But then again, a 265 grain bullet traveling at over 1400 FPS from a 41 Magnum is nothing to thumb your nose at either. That will drop any game in North America.

Got the gun! I'll shoot it in the morning, on the way to work. Maybe I'll leave out earlier, and wake the neighbors up with it. :)

MHR, you gotta go to www.sixgunner.com and check out the articles on .41 Mag by Paco Kelly, for both revolvers and Marlin rifles. Lots of really good info.

.41 Mag is one of my favorite revolvers. Also have a Marlin lever in that caliber, and it is not only handy in the woods but that bullet hits hard out there!

Best of luck. J.B.

Well, I have one .44 Magnum, Ruger SBH NM 7-1/2". But I have TWO Ruger .41's: 4-5/8" OM and 7-1/2" Bisley. That tell you anything?
The short gun with a 240 gr. RNFP cast bullet over a moderate tot of Unique makes a good defense piece, too.
Put a SBH hammer on your Blackhawks, and enjoy much improved handling.

If they take our guns, I intend to let my hair grow long and acquire the jawbone of an ass.

www.sixgunner.com is a regular internet stop for me. I got my Freedom Arms 97 (4-1/4" .357/.38, an incredible single action) from one of the site's writers, Bill Buckman.

I learned to shoot on Single Sixes, then a Blackhawk, then a Vaquero ... then moved over to 1911's and other autos. The circle's coming back around (hey, is that a pun? you know, a wheelgun?), and while my choice for a "defensive" gun would be a Sig P229 .40, I have a blast with the single actions.

I have a Lyman progressive reloader ... now if I could just learn how to use it ...
