Blackhawk Cylinder Latch Problem

My roommate just bought a New Model Blackhawk in .30 Carbine, and it seems to have a cylinder latch problem. When the loading gate is closed, the cylinder rotates freely, and when the hammer is cocked it over-rotates and needs to be manually turned slightly counter-clockwise to line up. It looks like the cylinder latch is not popping up when the loading gate is closed. I don't know much about single-actions but that definitely doesn't seem right.

So, he took it apart, and the cylinder latch plunger seems to be stuck in the frame. It doesn't move at all, so it's impossible to tell if the spring is there or not, but obviously that's why it's not working. Additionally, the hammer is difficult to cock-- it goes about halfway back easily, then has some resistance before you can fully cock it. I don't know if that is normal or not, as I've never owned a single-action. I can only surmise that it might be due to everything not locking up correctly.

BTW, this is a brand new pistol. He's going to call Ruger and see what they want to do, but I imagine it's going to have to go back. I was curious what everyone here might think.

Defective, return it. I have experienced the same factory defect and I have made the same simple mistake myself. Ruger will repair it. Are you certain it was NIB?

Definitely NIB unless the distributor isn't telling the truth. The gun shop special ordered it as they did not have it in stock.

OK. The reason I asked is, I thought they had not been made recently. I came across a deal on 30 carbine ammunition a couple of months ago. I wanted a Ruger for a hunting revolver. I couldn't find one. I don't need it now.

Send it back to Ruger. I had a poorly polished SP101 which gouged up it's hammer and a Redhawk which part of the cylinder was unblued and covered over with grease. Both were ordered direct but in my lust I forgot to check them until later so you are not alone. No problems with the MK2 and Mini-14 though. I hope this helps and good luck.

Still in the catalog, although the only place I've ever actually seen one for sale is at a gun show. None of the local gun stores keep it in stock.

It's a beautiful gun and they're supposed to be a ton of fun to shoot. I guess we'll find out when it comes back from Ruger.

It is possible that the spring is bent or misaligned with the latch. It has to be aligned carefully when reassembling the gun.Did you take the trigger guard off to check it?

The Cylinder Latch Spring Plunger doesn't even move. It looks like it's attached to the frame while I can see in the parts diagram there is a spring underneath it that I imagine should push it up.
