blackhawk concealed

Was wondering if anyone carried anything as large as a ruger blackhawk concealed or for that matter any s/a revolver and how, or if its even practical.

mokster,

Ruger Blackhawks are EXCELLENT single action (SA) revolvers – outstanding quality, durable, accurate, reliable, with fine fit and finish – but in a defensive firefight, I doubt if any SA revolver can provide the rate of fire that you may require. I stipulate that many defensive scenarios are resolved just by showing a big handgun and others are finished with a single shot fired. However, what happens if you miss with the first shot against a felon armed with (for example) a 9x19mm semiautomatic loaded with 15+1 JHPs? I certainly would prefer a DA revolver or an autoloader under those circumstances!

Shoulder holster is about the only way, or a really high ride belt holster. Ted Blocker makes a nice one.

Practical as any revolver, except on the reload. Just become proficient with it.

A good single action shooter can surprize you at how fast they can fire the revolvers. Like any other shooting it's all in the amount of practice you put into it.
Ruger does or did make a Birdshead with a 3 3/4" barrel I think. That should be no bigger than a 4" L-frame S&W except in the cylinder width. Concealability will always be about how you dress around the gun rather than gun itself.

Here's a "seconded" motion on Bob Mernickles' work. I have a couple of his rigs. They are of excellent quality.

Call him directly- He will take the time to figure out somethig that will work for you personally. He's not a one-size-fits-all guy.

Out of curiosity what rind of rate of fire should one expect in a gun fight? I carried a m638 S&W snubbie CCW at one time and didn't feel under gunned. Since I know live in a non gun friendly state I only carry when out bumming. I am pretty sure my Blackhawk in 45 with 250 grain xtps at 1000fps would resolve any situation my 5 shot snubbie 38 would handle. I am not saying I would prefer it over my Kimber CDP but its better than no gun or a little gun(38,380,25,22,ect). Also when protecting yourself from critters such as bear or big cats I'd much rather have the SA than say a 9mm auto or 357 snubbie. I think the gun should be dictated by the threat not by what’s convenient or ideal for anti personnel.

hank,

I am certain there are experts re the rate of gunfire who will answer your question much more professionally. However, I will offer one comment: My father was an FBI Special Agent (and firearms instructor) many decades ago. He repeatedly told me the FBI subscribed to the "Rule of Threes" re handgun fights: (1) three seconds or less; (2) three rounds or less; and (3) three yards or less. This would suggest a rate-of-fire of at least a round a second, probably more.
