Blacken Garand gas cylinder?

The gas cylinder on a Garand is a variant of stainless steel no? If so, does anyone know of a good home method of blackening it? I've got one that's lost most of its' factory coating and is nearly in the white.

It is stainless steel

One procedure to blacken them was to paint them, and then bake the paint on in an oven

TM 9-1275 calls for a mixture of flat black paint thinned, 2 ounces thinner to 1 quart paint. Bake for 1.5 hours at 300 to 350*F. Gas cylinders should hang from a wire inside the oven, not lay flat on a tray

TM 9-1275 also mentions another manual, TM 9-1861, for another blackening procedure, but I don't have that manual

They did mine and my garand looks great once again !

I have seen many people have stripped thinking they could re-blue or parkerize it only to realize too late that it is stainless steel !

I just use flat black BBQ grill paint or engine paint. Either will work fine.

Duracoat epoxy gun finish is good- unless you expect to get it hotter than 600 degrees while firing at human wave attacks(then use Duraheat instead, its good to 1800) and comes in colors that mimic parkerizing, and black oxide
specifically- no baking required.
