Black Talon ammo

I have had conflicting info on the Talon ammo. Some have said it is illegal if you are not LE and another told me it was just not being sold to civilians anymore. Can I use this legally and is there any chance of being sued if I do?

Well, the old "Black Talon" ammo of a few years ago is not illegal. They sell it at gun shows for ridiculous amounts of money. Don't know about the "new" Talon.

The boxes are marked "For Law Enforcement use only" and sales are voluntarily restricted by the manufacturer, but there are no laws prohibiting the sale of Black Talon or Ranger Talon ammunition.

An ole' folk tale by some member's here at TFL indicate
that the use of the old "Black Talon" ammunition as made
by Winchester, is illegal if used in a justifiable shooting. In
some instance's ego stricken DA's have been known to
prosecute any culprit's using this ammunition in self
defense situations. Case in point, this has happened
in Arizona as some member's have pointed out.

I guess it all depends on the area you live in, and how
big an ego your DA want's to establish? Here in poverty
stricken Alabama, the only thing the DA may want to know
is how in hell does one afford the real "Black Talon's", as
I've never known of anyone being raked over the coal's
for using it against the bad guy.:D :)

Best Wishes,

Captain, to the best of my knowledge, after reading a bunch of stuff on the Black Talons, there is no Federal ban on the ownership, or use, of them.

Some states, however, have different ideas on that.

Here in the Union of Socialist Kounties of NJ, the law says that NOBODY can carry ANY hollowpoint ammunition, except on-duty LEO. Not even off duty or retired LEO. I guess the rocket scientists in our legislature would much prefer ball ammo penetrate an assailant, and hit a civilian, rather than do too much damage to a bad guy that deserved to be shot.

So, where the Talons are concerned in NJ, you CAN own it, shoot it, and use it in a home defense scenario, but you cannot CARRY it. However, since we here in NJ have a better chance of seeing Elvis than seeing a CCW permit, that's not a real issue.

Best to check in your state, to see what the laws are. If you have a known firearms attorney in your state, like we have Evan Nappen here in NJ, you might want to check with him/her to see what their advice is.

What Blades67 said....except not all dealers Voluntarily restrict the sales to LEO only. I bought a box about 2 weeks ago at a "Cop shop"

The older Black Talons were re-designed due to political pressures and Winchester caved in. They are now sold as Ranger T and SXT

Black Talons have become an Urban legend......to be honest they (new Ranger T)are not my first choice in ammo, I only bought them because they didn't have any Gold Dots in 357 SIG.

There is nothing different from a legal point of view between the Black Talon and any other handgun ammo. Winchester voluntarily decides to not sell it to the public. All the stuff about how using them will get you sent to jail in an otherwise justified self-defense shoot is an urban legend. It is a non-issue, and anyway here in Texas the grand jury would probalby want to know where you bought it after they dismiss the case so they can get some themselves.

I've often said that even a bad guy does not deserve to be shot with one of these. I have seen tests and medical reports and these are just plain nasty. One reported problem is that during and operation a doctor's latex gloves would be pierced by one of the prongs and could transmit HIV if the patient had such. I have seen samples shot into ballistic gel and these prongs are very sharp and hard to bend out of the way. Imagine trying to remove a small trebble hook from a person, let alone one of these. Goes far beyond, stopping power. .... ;)

Be Safe !!!
