Black Hills ammo

Intrigued by Black Hills ammo, thinking about getting a box of 45's for my Sig for self defense, would it be a wise choice? any thoughts?

I would go with something that isn't re-manufactured. Personally I like about everything Hornady, Critical Defense would be my load choice.

Only the moderately-priced "blue box" ammunition from Black Hills is remanufactured. Even so it is excellent ammunition.

Most Black Hills ammunition is newly manufactured and the quality is outstanding, as good as or better than any ammunition you can buy.

We carried Black Hills for duty ammo for some time and never had a problem. Switched to Winchester and it worked well, then Hornady (hmmm, maybe a problem or two,) and back to Winchester.

I've worked with Black Hills ammunition in several guns & calibers over the years & always found it consistently reliable.
I recommend it without hesitation.

While I have no problem with Black Hills ammo, I think your idea to just "go grab a box" of whatever ammo for your SD pistol is flawed.
Maybe 5 boxes, shoot 4 in practice and function testing, and keep the 5th for SD.
Maybe I'm odd, but I've never bought one box of any type of ammo since I was 15 years old and only had the $$ for that one box. Back in the old days, we could buy shotgun shells one at a time from open boxes behind the counter cause there were a LOT of folks who couldn't afford a full box.

ammo choice

You are not going to find the best factory round to carry by shopping name.
Every gun out there both revolver and semi -auto will shoot to a different POA with each brand it's fed.
Don't believe it, take your 22 out and shoot four different brands and types of ammo and see what you have. The same applies to centerfire.

Test It

I have found that even within brands there is a difference between calibers as to shooting to POA.
I have used Wincheter Silvertips for years in 9 mm and now in 10 mm-no problem at all.
I tried Silvertips in a 45 Colt and they shot low on three different 45 Colt revolvers I own. Can't figure it out, particularly on my USFA SAA which always shoots to POA at 30 feet.

Make sure you leave the brass where I can pick it up if you buy it. BHA uses good brass. They package reloading brass for Remington. I have a bag of .41 Mag R-P brass that says packaged by Black Hills. Thier .223 is loaded with new LCC cases. Though some may have different years. All is loaded with virgin brass, that is not crimped. I love when guys show up with AR rifles and leave me several hundred pieces of brass when they get done.

i shoot black hills hollowpoints out of my ar15 and my m14 and the only time i had a problem with jamming was when the reciever of the ar was so dirty it took 45 minutes to clean. and the only reason it was that dirty was because it hadnt been touched since june of 2009 until about a month ago
