Black Hills 5X5

Being old and lazy I use horses for Elk Hunting. Only problem, this year I hunted a section of the Black Hills that is only 34 miles (as the crow flys) from the house.

I only took my Belgium, leaving wife's paint home. These suckers are quite attached to each other so the Belgium gets lonely and on openning morning desides to try and go home.

So I spend the first three days of elk season hunting horse instead of elk. Finely find the idiot where he came to fences on the SD border he cant get through. He was kind of wore out so I deside to give him the day off and hunt on foot.

After a full day of working my butt off I start back to camp about sunset and find this sucker about 300 yards from my trailer. I was able to get the truck to it and drag it to camp.

Not real heavy but a nice balanced 5 X 5. If I waited until next year he would have been a 5 X 6 as he had a sixth nobby foruming on one side. Game and fish says its a 5X6 as its a point anytime you can hang ring on the point. You can but I still say its a 5X5.

Anyway elk hunting is done for this season, my horsey is back with his buddy and all is well.

I took both rifles ( I like taking a spare when I'm elk hunting).

As I said, I'm old and lazy. I don't like the idea of tracking wounded elk at night so in the late evening I use my 375 H&H Model 70.

Not much chance of having to track wouldn't elk with a good hit with a 250 Grn Sierra Game King at 2700+ FPS.

Hit it in the ribs, going in one side and out the other, no meat damage but it worked, anchored him right there, didn't take a step after being hit.

I believe under the same conditions the 150 Hornady IBs would have done the same thing. It was only about 150 yards and a clear side shot.

But if anyone is interested, the Sierra 250 Game king is one super accurate bullet. I used 72 grn of 4064 with a 250 yard zero. 2715 FPS at 10 yards from the muzzle.

It mounts a Weaver K4.

Nice shooting.Looks like some fine eating. It is always an adventure with children and animals involved with a hunt trip.

Now fire up the grill and enjoy the rewards of your effort.

Most splendid on your elk, as for the horse thats why i have a polaris 850, it never runs off. Well there was the one time i didnt set the e-brake.lol:D
