Black Gun sight in/iron sights

Need to sight in a couple of AR's with iron sights. What's the best distance to use, that being said by someone with "old eyes"? I mean, how far can I reasonably expect to be able to group with iron sights??? Or for that matter, hit the paper!

Start at 25 yards; this should have your AR zeroed for about 300 yards depending on you barrel length. 2 MOA is expected from an AR with Iron Sights; well within battle rifle accuracy.
The military taught this to give a window of allowance for the M16 rifle so that adjustments wouldn't have to be made for the 0-300 yard range.
You just basically aim lower at 100 yards (you'll be about 3.5-3 icnhes high at distances of 100-200 yards)
I can get you the dope sheet for this if you want.

Sheepdog and zippy, thanks for the info, and the download zippy, this should be all that I need to get things within a respectable range. I just didn't want to start out trying to hit a target at one hundred yards and sit around wondering where the heck the bullet went. 25 yards, or 25 meters, I ought to be able to handle that. Thanks again.

Sight it in for the distance you want to shoot. My main AR has sight settings for 200, 300, 600 & 1000 yards. The other one (used in multi gun matches) is sighted in for 250 yards. It will hit the normal targets used up to 300 yards and more.

I use iron sights, I have old eyes, (I'm 63), I shoot my AR open sights to 1000 yards. It really doesn't matter the distance, you're suppose to focus on the front sight anyway. The distance to the front sight dosn't change regardless of what distance you shoot.
