Has anyone ever heard of feeding Black Eyed Peas out of Protein feeders instead of the protein. Here in Texas, utilizing automatic feeders and protein feeders is pretty much the norm on all ranches and leases. I was hog hunting at a friend of mines ranch last night that is pretty highly game managed. High Fenced, Automatic feeders, Protein Feeders, Etc. Anyway, he was telling that they feed black eyed peas out of the protein feeders instead of protein pellets. The price of corn has gone up to over $10 for a 50 lb bag in most places and the price of 50 lb bags of the protein pellets is up to anywhere from $16 to $18 a bag. He said that they buy the 50 lb bags of black eyed peas for around $8 a bag and they actually have a higher protein content than the protein pellets. He said they have seen much better results from feeding the black eyed peas than they were with the bags of protein. I was pretty amazed and just wondering if anyone else had heard of this before.

I've never heard of it, but I know that deer love all types of legumes. I've planted iron clay peas in a food plot and they are a deer magnet.

I don't know how much protein the pellets have, but black-eyed peas are pretty high.

I don't doubt that they'd work well for the purpose if you can buy them cheap enough.
