Bisley hammer on a Blackhawk

I recently saw a pic of a Ruger Blackhawk that had been "Bisley-ized", as it was termed. I believe it was one of John Taffin's pieces. The Blackhawk had a Bisley-style grip and hammer. Anyway, I've always liked the Bisley-style hammer, and wouldn't mind swapping hammers on my Blackhawk.

So, how would I go about such a venture? Where do I go to get a Bisley hammer for my Blackhawk, and how do I go about swapping it? Is this a job for a gunsmith, or something not entirely too complicated (for someone with very little such experience)?

Thanks.

Brownells sells all the parts, buy the catalog it's $5 you'll be glad you did (free if you have a FFL or C&R). They even offer a kit that has all the necessary parts for a complete Bisley conversion: grip frame, trigger, hammer, bits & pieces, and instructions. Everything but the grip wood. Discount cost to an FFL holder is around $140. The grip frame is the expensive thing. Hammers alone are around $20.

Call Brownells customer service during normal business hours, ask for a Service Tech, talk to them about it. Ask for the free service bulletin Brownells published a couple of years ago with detailed instructions on how to do the conversion, all the parts, tools, and step-by-step instructions, it does require a very minor amount of fitting but should be no problem for a home hobbiest. -- Kernel

BAB,

I installed a Bisley grip frame, hammer, and trigger on my Blackhawk convertible last year.

It was one of my 1st "kitchen table" projects on a revolver. I got all the parts I needed from Brownells, but you can also order them from Ruger.

I learned how to take the Blackhawk apart by reading a 3 part series on "Bisley Tigger Improvements", over at www.realguns.com
Go to the archive section to find the articles.

If you want to just swap the hammer, I think you may have to open up the grip frame a bit.

It's a fun project that is well within the abilities of anyone who can detail strip and reassemble a revolver. Minor fitting and finishing is about all that will be needed.

Good Luck, and don't be afraid to ask for detailed help if you need it.

Joe
