im looking at buying a rifle for my dads upcoming birthday. would love to hear any ideas on a new or used rifle for around $300 also something that the ammo is cheap for would be a bonus.

I'd look into a Remington 700 used with a wood stock. .270 .30-06 .308 are all common and cheap calibers. You can pick up a new 700 ADL for $400 so if you're looking for used then you MIGHT be able to find a BDL or even a CDL for $300-$350. Other than that I'd also look at the Winchester model 70, its around the same price. And finally check out Savage rifles, they're very accurate and durable for a new price at $300-$400. Note: everything I mentioned are bolt action hunting/paper punching rifles. Hope I helped you out.

More information needed! Does your Dad hunt or just plan on plinking empty soda pop cans? How much recoil can he stand? Any health problems? How much experience with rifles in the past? For real fun and real cheap there are some great .22 rifles on the market and then the power range and expense goes up from there. More details might help. The current information is pretty vague. :)

thanks for the reply so far! here is some more information that might help. the main use for the rifle would be target practice and hunting only rarely. he does like larger calibers such as 30 06. and he is a very good marksman.

A nice lever action in 30-30 would be a great present. Maybe an older marlin 336 or a model 94 Winchester. Both would great guns.
