Birmingham AL Gun Show this weekend

Anybody else attending the Alabama Gun Collectors Association's Gun Show 10/21-22 at the Birmingham-Jefferson Co. Civic Center. My past experiences with this show have been memorable as there will likely be up to 800 tables with vendors from everywhere.

In making out my shopping list for the show I've decided on the following items:

- another AK type rifle as my SLR-95 is feeling lonely;

- more high cap magazines;

- old S&W J-frame revolvers. (I like the 3 inch barrel versions and also "need" a one chambered in .22LR)

- will be looking for the new Taurus Model 62 .22 rifle. It is a copy of the old Winchester 62 slide action rifle and reports on the Taurus version sound great.

- as always, I'll be looking for those special deals on reloading supplies, bulk bullet supplies especially.

Can't think of anything else. Anybody want to post their shopping list? Maybe give me some ideas.

Guess I should be towing my trailer, may need it!

I'll be there, at least until time to go watch the Tide and the Vols. I'm sorta kinda looking for any bargains on what I think of as interesting handguns, such as pre-sellout S&W's, Makarovs, maybe a CZ75 if I run across a deal. I'll spend a lot of time sitting behind my friend's table. I have found it's easier to get a real bargain by watching the sellers go by than to try to find the one nugget out on some dealer's table. Many times, the non-FFL table holders have their stuff priced at new/retail plus. It amazes me that they believe folks will pay stick-up prices for stuff, just because it's a private sale.

AUT, how can I spot you? Isn't it great how people of different religions (football) can put their sectarian differences aside during a religious celebration (gunshow)?

AUTiger73,

Long time no see.

I also will be there Saturday morning.

I will be looking for a bolt action .22, and believe it or not a S&W J frame with a 3"barrel.

I am also looking to pick up some more smithing tools.

There are also usually a couple of book vendors set up, who seem to wind up with a disproportionate amount of my money.
Best place I know of to pick up those giveaway copies of "Unintended Consequences".

Hutch:

Yes, can't let such trivial pursuits as a football game interrupt the more important business of a gun show. Having said that, I'll be wired into the Auburn - La Tech game starting at 1:OO P.M. You can recognize me by the khaki vest and cap with unusal wings emblem, earphone screwed tightly into one ear, and radio antenna protruding from inside vest pocket and a occasional War Eagle shout for each touchdown! (Also, age 55 and lots of gray-white hair.)

Just picked-up 2 Alabama - Auburn tickets @ $ 50 each. Maybe I should bring them for "trading fodder" ... ?

I agree that those pre-sellout S&W revolvers are irresistable. I especially like the earlier pinned barrel version. Wish I could find a '50s production 6" barrel J frame in .22LR in like new condition, but it would probably cost "mucho denaro".

Yes, the best deals come walking through the door. My favorite line is "what ya got there" and next favorite is "what ya asking for it" ... I can remember times that I bought and sold within a few hours and went home with a profit ... makes the wife happy too! Of course such activities would upset AlGore and his father Bill Clinton terribly. That just breaks my Republican heart!

Yup. My cousin, a die-hard Tiger, had a TV with him behind our table during the AU win at the Swamp. He dropped the TV off his lap win the winning touchdown pass was caught. There was quite an uproar thru-out the show, as I recall. I disposed of a 3" square-butt nickel M36 for a friend a couple years ago. It was LNIB, and I think it brought $235. A similar gun in 2" RB would have easily commanded $275. FYI, the TV-dropper's brother (my cousin as well, obviously) was the long-snapper for the Tigers back in '74-75, IIRC.

By the way, do you actually live down on the redneck Riviera, or simply in LA? I have to go to Columbus from Birmingham every week, and I've seen about all of hwy280 I'll ever want to. Too bad I can't remember any good Auburn jokes.<G> For the uninitiated, it's kinda like Aggie jokes, or Polish jokes, only they're usually true.

Hope to see you there AU. 11Xray, are you a local B'ham person? Feel free to take any of this to email if you want, guys.

Hmmm...

Girlfriend lives in Birmingham.. I live in Atlanta.

Who to visit.. girlfriend.. gunshow.. girlfriend.. gunshow.. girlfriend.. gunshow.. Oh MAN, decisions, decisions!! ;)

Actually.. I might show up, I dunno. I have the desire and $$$ to purchase but I probably should not -- and just hang on to it. Ah well.

Any restrictions or extra hoops I'd have to jump through to purchase a firearm from AL sine I live in GA? Anybody?

KaMaKaZe, why not visit both?

Hutch, yes I am. I live in Southside. Never miss a gunshow, if I can help it.

Y'all wanna meet up for breakfast before the show or something?

I still know plenty of Awbarn jokes.

Once again, greetings to all from the Sovereign State of Lower Alabama, the land of peanut dust and wacky weed.

Hutch: By Redneck Riveria I assume you mean the P.C., Destin, and Mexico Beach area ... which is about 90 miles south of me. I live in the "Circle City" area, the infamous speed trap of S.E. AL. I rarely go to the beach as there are too many crazy sonsofabeaches down there to suit me! Find it much safer hunting or fishing in my farm pond.

My past "conquest" at the Birmingham Civic Center Gun Shows include one very unusal S&W Model 60 - 3 inch DAO revolver. YES, it is a true DAO from the S&W factory, 1 of 2 runs of 2000 each from 1989 manufacturer which was likely ordered by the NYPD. By DAO I'm referring to a "bobbed-off" hammer and altered lock work that has no SA notch. After certain LEOs "accidently" shot a few perps during the "cuff and stuff" process, various police administrators got nervous and ordered revolvers as DOUBLE ACTION ONLY. (Remember the Miami case that caused a riot?) Apparently there was an over-run in the contract since my Model 60 was NIB for $275. Nice gun and excellent DAO trigger pull. It's a keeper. One of my sons has a Model 36 from the same contract, 3 inch barrel and DAO but in blue finish.

On this visit to the Birmingham show I'll be looking for yet more unusual versions of the S&W J frame, maybe even the earlier version S&W I frame in .32 or 38 S&W. On the larger scale, I will be looking for limited edition Lew Horton S&W N frame revolvers.

I will NOT be looking at any of the S&WClinton "sell-out" guns. S&W lost this customer.

Nah.. she'll be workin' all weekend and wouldn't be around. At any rate -- my parents are goin' out of town and asked me to head on up to their side of the state to feed the critters while they're gone. Oh well, while I'm back in my old hometown I can always visit the local shop(s) and buy a new scope (or two) that I've been lookin' for.

11-xray, I already have an out-of-towner arriving at my house for a pre-show breakfast, so a Waffle-house meet is a non-starter. Also, another amigo has a table at this show, and the local posse will be disposing of no-longer-strategic stuff. We'll probably wind up buying each other's stuff, I bet.

I didn't realize any RKBA'rs actually lived in Southside. I had family there for a while, and the area they were in (Forest Park, Cliff Road) could be called almost anything except gun-friendly. Just my impression, of course. Good folks can be found almost anywhere. (There, is that conciliatory enough?)

Hutch, here in Southside, you can't throw a rock without hitting a squishy liberal moron/freak in the head. But there are more RKBA types than you would expect.
The guy that lives across the street from me is a serious historical collector.
My next door neighbor is a avid hunter.
The old guy down at the end of the street is a Battle of the Bulge vet.
And there are quite a few Vietnam vets in the neighborhood.

We all intend to keep our RKBA.

Anyway, look for me Saturday. I'm 6'5", 210lbs., I wear glasses, just started growing a beard (that time of year), and will be wearing a green boonie hat just so my friends can spot me.
